Standard Combat
Series Tournament

Origins 1997

by Mike Lochtefeld

Origins '97 was the setting for the second annual Standard Combat Series tournament. While the turnout was small this year, there were three wargamers up to the challenge: Scott Goldsmith, Chris Volny, and Richard Rubin. Due to the number of participants, I used a double-elimination format to determine this year's winner.

At right, Richard Rubin (left) and Scott Goldsmith (right) in the finals of the SCS tournament.

The first round match featured Scenario 4.5 from Yom Kippur with Chris's Egyptian forces triumphing over Scott's Israeli units. The second round, which also used the same Yom Kippur scenario, once again witnessed an Egyptian victory under Richard's command over Chris' Israeli forces.

With one loss each, Chris and Scott faced off in Scenario 4 of Stalingrad Pocket II. Both players fought to a draw, with Scott winning the tie-breaker since his German forces inflicted more step losses. The final round also featured Scenario 4 from SP II and was certainly a long and hard fought battle. In the end, Richard's German units achieved an automatic victory with some fancy maneuvering.

Congratulations to Richard Rubin and his perfect record in the SCS tournament. Also, thanks to Scott and Chris for a fun and entertaining tournament. Due to the low turnout over the past two years, I will probably change the format of the SCS tournament for next year's Origins. I welcome any comments or suggestions on how to make this tournament more appealing to fans of the series. Please e-mail me at MLochtefel@aol.com.

Additionally, I would like to thank those individuals who hosted the Yom Kippur and Crusader tournaments. It was especially exciting to see the number of participants in the Yom Kippur tournament. Finally, I would like to thank Dean and The Gamers for sponsoring the tournament again this year. Thank you for your support to this series of games and to the hobby.

SGS-Sponsored SCS Tournament

Apart from the SCS tournament Mike Lochtefeld ran at Origins '97, the Strategy Gaming Society conducted an SCS event. The games selected for competition were Yom Kippur and Crusader.

And here are the results:

Yom Kippur play included ten participants. The top four contenders were

    1st place Henry C. Robinette
    2nd place Joe Wilson
    3rd place Steven G. Williams
    4th place Michael Pitts

The (then) brand new Crusader drew four participants. The top three were

    1st place Steven G. Williams
    2nd place Rich Rubin
    3rd place J. W. Ferguson

Congratulations to prize winners Henry Robinette and Steven Williams, and to all who put their skill on the line in SCS competition. Thanks also to the crew from the Strategy Gaming Society for running the event.
