Wargaming in the Classroom:

Scenario and Rules

By John Stafford

I mentioned in the previous article how I set up a day long wargaming event for my daughter Hillary's 5th grade class. This article includes the rules, terrain setup, and order of battle for fighting this Rome Vs. the Barbarian Horde scenario. Try it at home, and tweak things to your satisfaction-then spring it on some players you know and enjoy the fun. I gave each commander listed one or more sub commanders to move and roll dice for two units. I did this to allow 26 children to fight in the battle, but you can reapportion commanders to the number of players you have.

ORDER OF BATTLE

Romans

Caesar-mounted, commanding army center (3 sub commanders)
1 artillery unit (2 stands)
1 psiloi unit (6 stands)
4 legionnaire units (4 stands)

Lucius Aemilius-mounted, commanding left wing (1 sub commander)
2 light horse units (4 stands)
1 cavalry unit (4 stands)
1 auxilia unit (4 stands)

Gaius Antistius-mounted, commanding left center (1 sub commander)
1 psiloi unit
1 artillery unit
1 auxilia unit
1 legionnaire unit

Marcus Aristius-mounted, commanding right center (2 sub commanders)
1 psiloi unit
2 artillery units
1 auxilia unit
2 legionnaire units

Quintus Atius Varus-mounted, commanding right wing (1 sub commander)
1 light horse unit
2 cavalry units
1 cataphract unit (4 stands)

Barbarians

Orgetorix--foot, commanding army center (4 sub commanders)
8 warband units (6 stands)

Ariovistus-foot, commanding right wing (3 sub commanders)
6 warband units
2 berserk units (wedge-2 stand equivalent)

Boduognatus-mounted, commanding left wing (3 sub commanders)
5 warband units
1 light horse unit (6 stands)
2 berserk units

Basing and dicing for generals is per DBA rules. Movement and combat are like DBA but units move as a whole rather than individual stands.

Also, if a barbarian foot unit is within 6" of a Roman foot unit, it must move full movement straight at the enemy until contact is made-no fancy wheeling although some common sense for aligning units should be used. See the Reference Chart for more details and the Terrain Map.
