The Pros & Cons of Conventions

By Bob & Cleo Liebl

By its very nature, wargaming causes wargamers to divide into small cells of individuals who hide in basements and gather around their tables to plot the overthrow of boredom. These Bands of Brothers have all they need—a table, miniatures, dice, ruler, & chips—or do they? There are times, when in our very effort to abolish boredom by playing a game, that we slip into boredom by having the same old game with the same old group, and never looking beyond. Where can we go to see new games, new ideas in terrain, new miniatures, and meet new wargamers? Conventions!

Left to right: Siefried, Featherstone, Liebl.

I have a fairly fertile imagination because it’s full of…full of…full of ideas, and yet I’ve rarely gone to a convention from which I’ve not come away with new ideas. I’d never thought about Victorian Sci-Fi until I’d gotten involved in some of the HAWKS games, and I was hooked. I’d never thought about, or even read about the Spanish Civil War until bumping into Pat Condray. Conventions are also a place to meet new friends and renew old friendships.
