The Readers Guide to Military History lists the following as the "Ten Greatest Generals of All Time". Here is their list and compare it to mine (Both are in chronological order) I think my list is so much better because my guys “GOT SCOREBOARD”. My ten, to my knowledge, never lost a major engagement and went out on top. I am not saddled with "losers" like Hannibal, Saladin and Napoleon and lets face it Slim led a backwater effort in Burma, Sherman faced nothing but second stringers and Von Molke was pretty much a desk jockey. I don't see how any list could exclude Alexander and Genghis Khan. I also tend to favor guys who were the ones that proved the other "invincible" force could be beaten. Look at Scipio, Bellisarius, Wellington and Zhukov. These studs went out and showed that it was not only possible to stop the unstoppable force but to soundly thrash it! Cyrus and Attila took a bunch of nomads and turned them into great empire builders. Henry V had a lot of Alexander in him, winning great, astounding victories against overwhelming odds. And of course Stonewall. He may not be as illustrious as the others but his valley campaign alone gets him on my list. Oh how different would day one at Gettysburg have been with him leading his beloved II Corps. Curiously neither list contains Caesar. Guess it was his vulnerability to flank attacks! Et tu Brute. What would your list look like?
