At Historicon 2002, the NOVAG wargamers had their own room for putting on wargames, and it was a great experience. Roxanne’s lancers ride to glory.
In Walt O’Hara’s Le Grand Cirque game, we see Dracula’s Hearse being pulled by a flight of bats. It’s only a fly-by-night contraption, but I found it amusing when I drove it in one of his games. Unfortunately, for propulsion, the bats really sucked. Don Featherstone and Duke Seifried join Bob, Cleo and Walt at Historicon. In the first letter Don wrote to us after the Con, he mentioned how Jim Butters, another NOVAG member from Frederick, MD, had given him the tour of Monocacy Battlefield, before delivering him to the airport. Back in England, Don suffered from a heart attack. He’s improving, now, but when he wrote he was surprised by the hundreds of cards and letters he received during his illness from us Americans. I guess we’re just a friendly lot. The article Cleo and I wrote on dining our in Lancaster—which was reprinted by Pat Shields in the Historicon Program—meant it was difficult to go out to eat without attracting a following. Since we prefer dining with our wargame buddies, this was no problem. HOWEVER, when Duke Seifried said he had a party of several dozen gamers, it was a challenge. We ended up with 9 vehicles in a caravan that stretched from us back to Jim Butters.
Knowing the local by-ways, I took us on unpaved roads through some farmers’ fields. Duke was up through the sunroof directing our column, much like Patton—or was it Rommel? I think that may be us in the photograph below. Either that, or it’s the Duke’s game.
