Medieval Warfare

Tournament Winners and
Rules Changes

by Russ Lockwood

We received the following news release.--RL

The first ever MW tournament is history. Jeff Ball won the trophy and also the 1st prize of 20 packs of Foundry figures (thank you Bryan). 2nd prize was split 3 ways, so we awarded Tony and Silvio Marra as well as Perry Gray and Kevin Boylan 5 packs of Foundry figures each. Thanks to all 14 of you who played.

At Fall In we will be doing both 15mm and 25mm scales. Please email me with your army and intent to play as I have to let Scott Holder know how many tables we need. The tourney will run Saturday, three rounds. I'll have more info up on the web site as we get finalised.

The big news is that Jeff Ball has joined SAGA as a rules writer and will be coordinating, playtesting and pretty much writing the Renaissance Warfare rules booklet. Jeff has been a huge help to us in the past in promoting the MW rules set and his expertise and gaming knowledge are essential components in making these rules the best on the market.

Finally, we have some rules changes that were the result of the tournament games.

#1. All longbow-armed units, whether skirmishers, cavalry, whatever, now cost an additional 1 point per stand. this relfects their superior 'training' in the use of the weapon as well as its lethality.

#2. Obstacles are now treated as Light Terrain. No more disorder for loose order foot crossing them.

#3. On the Victory Points chart, we are adding two items.

1 Point if there are no non-skirmisher enemy units on your side of the table at the end of the battle. (This encourages aggressive play, instead of passive sit back and watch play). Eliminate more enemy killed and replace with

1 Point for 50 points of enemy troops killed. (This eliminates non-aggressive tactics).

#4. We are including a new optional tournament terrain generation table. The table is divided into 6 equal sectors.

a.. The player gets to select his desired terrain (from 0-5) each and then rolls a d10 to place.
    b.. 1 or a 2 is a discard.
c.. 3 or a 4 is placed in the friendly left flank sector.
d.. 5 is placed in the friendly center sector.
e.. 6 is placed in the friendly right flank sector.
f.. 7 is in the enemy left flank sector.
g.. 8 is placed in the enemy center.
h.. 9 or 10 is placed in the enemy right flank sector.
i.. No rivers or streams may run through the center two sectors of the field.
