Treasure hunters may have found Queen Anne's Revenge, the flagship of the pirate of Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, two miles offshore in 20 feet of water called Beaufort Inlet. The ship sank in 1718, hitting a sandbar and tipping over. A decade of research went into locating the wreck, including examining hundreds of nautical charts and a key 1759 document by a witness who said the ship became stuck while trying to enter the inlet. The site is dominated by a mound of cannons and coral. So far, a blunderbus barrel, 24-pound cannon, sounding weight, and a bronze bell dated 1709 have been pulled from the sea. All of the artifacts become property of the state. Back to 2nd Quarter 97 List of News Items Back to Master List of News Items Back to Master Magazine List © Copyright 1996 by Coalition Web, Inc.
