From Norway comes the word that a Spanish galleon loaded with gold, silver, and jewels, La Capitana Jesus Maria, has been found off the coast of Ecuador. This flagship, lost since the 1600s, contains an estimated $3.7 to $7.5 billion worth of treasure--which the salvage consortium splits 50-50 with Ecuador. It would be nice if the recovery includes a naval archeologist to properly map the ship and locations of all the items, not likely, but a nice idea. The consortium took three years to find the ship. One can only wonder how long this will be tied up in Peruvian courts. Peru? Evidently, the treasure was plundered from what is now Peru. Doubloons to dimes that Peru will take the matter to court to receive a piece of the estimated billions.
