Wally Simon

Obituary

by Fred Haub

It is with great sorrow that I must tell you that last night I received a phone call from Warren Simon, Wally Simon's son, that Wally had died sometime Monday, Memorial Day, 2005. He was at home in his apartment, and apparently passed away quietly on the sofa while watching television. Cause of death is likely his ongoing health problems.

There will be a small, private family funeral this Friday June 3rd, followed on the same day by a reception for everyone at Warren's home at 3207 Cherrymill Drive, Hyattsville, MD, just off Powder Mill Road. The reception starts at 3pm and will continue long into the evening. Warren asks not to call if possible. A charity for donations in Wally's name will be announced shortly.

This has been quite a shock and I'm not sure what else to say. I hope to see you this Friday when we can gather together and talk about old times.

This is indeed sad news. I've gotten to know Wally over the years, primarily through PW Review and MagWeb, but also at conventions and by visiting his home and our forays to the National Archives. His often curmudgeonly take on rules and systems will be missed. -- Russ Lockwood
