Scruby Award

Frank Chadwick

by Russ Lockwood

We received the following press release. --RL FRANK CHADWICK has been elected to receive the HMGS "Scruby Award" given every 2-6 years to someone who's "life-time contributions have made significant and permanent impact on the growth of the hobby of Historical Miniatures Wargaming." Past recipients include Don Featherstone, Duke Seifried, Phil Barker (WRG, DBA), Bob Coggins (Napoleons Battles), Dick Bryant (Courier). The Award is named for Jack Scruby, who died a few years ago. Jack practically "invented" the hobby of "lead miniature wargaming" as we know it in the USA, by casting most of the first 28mm lead wargaming figures in the US, printing the first stateside wargaming books, newsletters, articles, and promoting clubs across the Continent. HMGS also presents the "Legion of Honor Award" annually. The 2001 HMGS Legion of Honor Awardees are Duncan McFarlane (Wargames Illustrated Editor) and Pete Panzeri (Gamers International). LoH award is given annually for contributions making a significant impact on the hobby. Recipients include: Hal Thinglum, Frank Chadwick, Greg Novak, Jim Getz, Scott Bowden, Leo Cronin, Artie Conliffe, Craig Taylor, Jay Hadley, Charlie Sweet, Todd Fisher. Legion of Honor recipients nominate and vote on the Scruby Awards. Frank Chadwick, this year's Scruby Awardee is a previous LoH recipient. Aside from GDW Games, Command Decision Volley & Bayonet etc. he's the nicest and most articulate guy you ever met in the hobby, and (Norbert excepted) one of the smartest! He'll be awarded at the banquet. I'll be there to congratulate him, and I'm sure his words will be worth hearing. (He's a convincing speaker, and I'm urging them to ask him to please speak more than a few brief remarks.) Awards will be presented at the Scruby Banquet during the Historicon 2001 Convention, Saturday 21 July 1730-1900. You can register to attend the banquet though the PEL, mailer or Website. Cost is $25. We intend to spend our time at Historicon promoting the concept of Campaign-type events (which we'll be re-starting upon our return from Korea). We would appreciate support from JodieCon vets who will be attending Historicon, wearing their JodieCon Polos and T-shirts (especially on Saturday) and talking up the concept with folks at the Convention.
