Napoleonic Feldzug Series

Books

by Russ Lockwood

We received the following press release--RL

The FELDZUG SERIES is a book series with the ambitious program to cover many of the 1792-1815 battles!

Each number of the FELDZUG SERIES provides first class information derived from the original files in the Austrian and French War Archives, presented in a quality format. Much of this unique material is published for the first time ever, and at approximately £13 or US-$23 is very reasonably priced.

No.1 of Helmet's Feldzug Series "CASTIGLIONE 1796" is only recently out. It describes the battle of Castiglione 5 August 1796 where Napoleon defeated Field Marshal Wurmser's first attempt to relieve the fortress of Mantua during his famous first Italian campaign.

MOST DETAILED ORDERS OF BATTLE:

No.1 of the series "Castiglione 1796" for example won't simply let you know that Augereau's division comprised 17 bns, 11 sqns, 7 pieces. It will tell you that Augereau could dispose of 3 bns 4e demi-brigade de ligne (2.097), 4 sqns 22e regiment de chasseurs (245), Ist and IInd battalions 69e (1.019), 3 bns 45e (1.082), 4 sqns 20e regiment de dragons (351), 3 bns 51e (1.738), 3 bns 17e legere (1.073) and 3 sqns 1ier regiment de hussards. The pieces were 3 eightpounders, 1 twelvepounder gun and 3 sixin-howitzers. The numbers in the brackets are unit strengths. And Austrian OBs are just as detailed.

MOST DETAILED MAPS EXPLAINING THE FIGHTING:

The maps are full page. They do not display corps, divisions or brigades but each regiment, battalion or squadron separately. They are based on old Austrian maps as well as French ones drawn about 1800-1805 and taken as booty by the Austrians during their 1814 occupation of Paris. They show demi-brigade beside demi-brigade (with the number!) ... - information that will be reproduced in the books of the HELMET FELDZUG SERIES.

HOW THIS HIGH STANDARD COMES ABOUT:

I, Bernhard Voykowitsch, am Austrian and live in the vicinity of Vienna, Austria. Thus I'm very near to the Austrian war archives (the former K.u.k. Kriegsarchiv) where loads of files relating to the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars are preserved. Since my teens I have researched the one or the other aspect there but just for me, just for fun.

Due to the bicentennaries in 1995 and 1996 several of the magazines dedicated to the Napoleonic period published articles on the 1796-97 campaign. All of their authors regretted that due to the lack of archival research they couldn't give detailed information especially orders of battle.

I wondered if this information could be found in our archives. It could and the material I unburried was so exciting and superb that I thought it deserved to be published in proper books. Therefore I publish my findings in the FELDZUG Series. "Feldzug" is the German word for campaign.

To provide the same level of detail for the French side I do research at the French war archives at Vincennes Castle, Paris. Thus each number of the FELDZUG SERIES gives you first class information derived from the original files in the Austrian AND French War Archives. Much of this unique material is published for the first time ever.

To show the reader around on the actual battlegrounds I drive to there to take photographs. A load of them is reproduced in the book(s).

Though I start with an "1796" battle I hope to be able expand the series to the whole 1792-1815 period.

Provided that "Castiglione 1796" works economically I plan to publish the following titles: Valmy 1792, Neerwinden 1793, Courtray 1794, Tourcoing 1794, Fleurus 1794, Loano 1795, Mondovi 1796, Lodi 1796, Bassano 1796, Arcole 1796, Rivoli 1797, Tagliamento 1797, Malsch 1796, Neresheim 1796, Amberg 1796, Würzburg 1796, Magnano 1799, Adda 1799, Trebbia 1799, Novi 1799, Genola 1799, Marengo 1800, Messkirch 1800, Hohenlinden 1800, Mincio 1800, Ulm 1805, Caldiero 1805, Austerlitz 1805, Eckmühl 1809, Aspern 1809, Wagram 1809, Mincio 1814 and perhaps still more on the campaigns of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods.

This list is chronological for convenience only. The campaigns will be covered in an irregular manner! No.2 for example will be "Marengo 1800" (due out fall 1999).

PRODUCTION STANDARD:

Although this is a private effort the Feldzug Series is a quality production. Think of an Osprey Campaign Series (as regards the overall appearance!)
enlarged to A4-format (297 x 210 mm) featuring:
96 pages of first class paper quality; like of an Osprey
high gloss cover
text in English!
most detailed orders of battle (see above)
accurate battle maps (full page; scale 1:25.000, with contour lines!)
photographs of the combat sites today and many other color and black/white illustrations (average 2 per page)
although paperbacks the books are bound!

PRICE
is only Austrian Shillings (ATS) 270.00 (about £13.00, US-$23.00) including SURFACE postage! AIRMAIL would be additional ATS 95.00 (about £4.50 or $8.00). These exchange rates are approximative only. For time considerations I'm not in the position to change them according to the regular ups and downs. If there is a dramatic change however I will.
