We received the following press release--RL An interesting new Napoleonic book, Napoleon 1813 (424 pp), published by Janus Books of London, is out. Its author, Israeli-born Yehezkel Shelah, describes in detail the year 1813 - a turning point in Napoleon's military fortunes, as well as the year in which, according to Mr. Shelah, the first total war - as we understand the term now - was waged. Shelah calls the 1813 campaign "The First World War". He claims that the characteristics of the campaign were different from those of Naploeon's previous battles, in that all the elements of modern, total warfare - which the world was about to witness in the two great wars of the 20th century - were already discernible in it. He analyzes the psychological traits of Napoleon as a man, military innovator and leader, which led to the result of the campaign and to his eventual downfall two years later. The book, originally published in Hebrew to rave reviews, is lucid and fascinating while well-founded in research and historical data. It was selected "Book of the Year" by the Israeli Napoleonic Society. Yehezkel Shelah is a prominent Israeli businessman, and a former Colonel in the IDF reserve paratrooper corps.
