My friend Dave Hood tipped me off to this. He sent a photo to me described as the “F/A-37 Talon.” I went looking and found more photos on www.globalsecurity.org, as well as a Navy story on www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=13848. In late June of this year, a film crew went aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) to film “Stealth.” The heroes of the movie fly the “Talon,” but during the story an even more advanced version with a robotic pilot runs amok. The movie, starring Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel and Sam Shepard, will appear some time in 2005.
At first I thought this was Photoshop in action, but it ’s too soon after filming for such shots. Presumably, the film company built a full-scale model of the aircraft. The only “specifications ” available say it cruises at Mach 3.5, has a maximum speed of Mach 4+(!), and a range of 4000 nm. It must use Hollywood snake oil for fuel. A gamer looking for advanced (2010+) aircraft for a scenario might use this as good place to start. I am so waiting for the kit to show up.
