Seapower and Space - From the dawn of the Missile Age to Net-Centric Warfare, by Norman Friedman, Chatham Publishing. 2000, I am a big fan of the defense analyst and writer, Dr. Norman Friedman. I am especially a big fan of this book. You will learn more than you ever thought possible to read in an unclassified publication about space science and technology, both US and Russian, and how it affected the growth and development of the US and Russian military forces - especially the navies - since the appearance of Sputnik I. This book is incredible: it is pointless to try to summarize, since it is so rich in information and - from www.hamiltonbook.com - on sale for $12.95. It is almost impossible to understand some aspects of the modern US and Russian militaries without understanding the role of space systems in providing intelligence, observation, and communications to the current force structures. In addition, this book has a good basic guide to satellite technology and a brief but detailed history of the rockets used as launch vehicles. While the books’ focus is on SEAPOWER and space, it is possible to extrapolate the role of space in support of ground operations and air operations over land, as well as the operations above, on, and under the sea. There is no book I would recommend more highly than this as a guide to the role of space in support of military operations.
