We’ve never explicitly defined size classes for warships except by type. It should be done by displacement, of course, not by type. Just put a destroyer from WW I and WW II together. Then put them next to a modern destroyer! We did provide a displacement table for merchant size classes in Naval SITREP #5 (Oct 95). This table replaces that one. Players should use standard displacement wherever they can get it. Normal displacement is close to standard displacement and can be used as is. If lightship displacement data is available, you can convert this to an approximate standard displacement by multiplying by 1.33. For full load or loaded displacement, multiply by 0.88. These conversion factors aren’t exact for every ship class, but they are reasonable values that get you in the ballpark when standard displacement data for a combatant is not available. For merchant ships, multiply the gross registered tonnage by 0.75 to get a rough equivalent to standard displacement. This unified displacement approach requires some changes to Harpoon 4. Replace the damage point values on page 2-9 with the displace-ments listed below. They are largely equivalent, but the boundaries between some of the ship sizes have moved a little. In addition, it is now possible to have VSmall and Stealthy ships based solely on their physical size.
We won’t publish corrections to the older listings. For the most part, they’re fine. We will make sure all new ships published use these.
