Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat

Book Review

Review by Ed Kettler

Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat, by Capt. Wayne P. Hughes, Jr., USN (Ret.), Naval Institute Press, 2000, 723 pp., ISBN 1-55750-392-3, $36.95

Captain Wayne P. Hughes’ name is well-known and respected in the naval community because of his excellent book, Fleet Tactics. Published in 1986, it was an instant classic, and required reading for anyone at all interested in naval warfare.

This revised edition is very well-written, with a simple, conversational style that carries the content straight to the reader. You don’t have to be a naval officer to understand what he’s saying. But naval officers are reading it.

Look on the back. Having the Commander in Chief of Pacific Command endorse it would be reason enough for those on the fence. Although this a revised edition, anyone who has the first edition, as I do, should buy it and read it again.

There have been some changes in the past fifteen years. New material on cruise missiles and littoral warfare bring the book right up to date. For Harpoon gamers, look at the force comparison equations in chapter ten. They look like a great way to check the play-balance and setup of a scenario.

This is an important work. Buy it. It’s a good read, and you’ll learn a lot.
