USS Winston S. Churchill was commissioned on 10 March 2001. A Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class DDG, she is the first to carry the new 5 inch/62 gun mount. During precommissioning tests, she has fired both standard five-inch rounds and developmental ERGM rounds successfully. Churchill is only the fifth US Navy ship to be named for a foreign dignitary, and is the only ship in the US Fleet to have a permanent billet assigned for a RN officer.
