On 21 Nov 1994 NATO planes hit the Udbina airbase in Serbian-held Croatia. Laying aside whether or not airstrikes are an effective tool in the conflict, it does allow us to see how a strike package is constructed (see issue #1 Oct 94) in a "low-threat" environment. Only the runway was targeted. Thirty-nine planes hit the base, supported by an additional 15 aircraft. I am sure the reason for the odd number of strikers was an abort on takeoff. Assuming that the plan was for forty, the breakdown was probably: Strikers: 6 F-15Es with laser bombs, 4 French Jaguars w/PGMs, 6 (est) Dutch F-16 w/gravity bombs. Defense Suppression (Iron Hand): 6 (est) F/A-18D w/FLARMs and cluster weapons, 4 (est) UK Jaguars w/PGMs. Combat air patrol 10 US F-16C, 2 French Mirage 2000. Electronic Warfare: 2 EF-111 Reconnaissance: French Mirage F.1CT, Dutch F- 16. SAR Support: 2 (est) A-10s w/Maverick & bombs, 2 USA MH-53, 1 US HC-130, 1 French Puma. Command and Control: 1 E-3 AWACS, 1 EC-130, 1 RC-135. Tanker Support: 2 KC-135, 1 French C-135FR, 1 UK Tristar.
