REMARKS

Designed first as an interceptor, then a long-range escort fighter. Used components from existing aircraft (F4U, A-24, P-40) to reduce development costs. Used two 12-cylinder engines coupled on single shaft driving contra-rotating props. First flew 17 Nov 43. An order for 2500 aircraft was contingent on it passing flight tests, but the plane suffered from poor maneuverability, and was underpowered. The program was canceled 8 Nov 44.

The performance specifications listed on the form are for the actual aircraft. The planned specifications were 377 kts at altitude and 338 kts at sea level. The actual results were disappointing, almost 10% below design. An experimental intercooler being tested might have restored engine power, or if early errors had not been made in calculating the plane's CG, development might have gone more smoothly.

A "successfully developed" P-75 would have had the originally specified speeds and a Maneuver Rating of 2.5/2.0. It probably would have been fitted with drop tanks as well.

An exceptionally successful development might have resulted in a speed increase (streamlining) or heavier weapons (4 or 6 20mm) or exceptional maneuverability (well-designed airfoils and a well-balanced CG).

It's all make-believe, anyway
