Harpoon SSM

Clarification

By Larry Bond

A Harpoon player has pointed out a problem with rule 6.4.2.2. It seems that if we take the rule it literally then no matter how many weapon mounts, directors and kinds of missiles a ship has, so long as one of the ship's SSMs has been fired at a target, no other SSM can be fired unless it too is at the same target.

The rule now reads:

"Unless stated otherwise in the Remarks section of Annex A, a ship can only launch SSMs at one target at a time. It may launch as many missiles as its rate of fire allows, but they must all have the same target."

The rule should read:

"Unless stated otherwise in the Remarks section of Annex A, each separate SSM-capable missile system on a ship can launch SSMs at only one target at a time. It may launch as many missiles as its rate of fire allows, but they must all have the same target."

This of course allows the SAMs to fire in SSM mode at one target, while the SSMs fire at another. There are a few ships that carry two separate SSM systems (the Israelis come to mind) and they can fire missiles from each system at different targets.

The goal is to reflect the process at the weapons console. None of the SSM systems extant allows for multiple targets. Frankly, with the lethality of a small SSM and the defenses of many first-line navies, you want to shoot a lot of missiles at a single target.
