Modern Naval News

Greece is purchasing Zubr [Pomornik] hovercraft from Russia and Ukraine. The two countries will deliver four of the landing craft to Greece by 2002. Three of the vessels will be reconditioned, and one will be newly built. It is not known whether the craft will retain the Russian weapons systems or whether they will be removed. These hovercraft would be very useful for moving troops to and among the many disputed islands in the Aegean. In spite of their speed, they are notoriously vulnerable to ground fire, so their use in an assault landing would be unwise.

The Greeks are also buying 60 Eurofighter Typhoon, to be delivered 2005 - 2009.

Poland is receiving 2 O.H. Perry-class guided missiles frigates from the US. The first, USS Clark, was transferred in March, the second, USS Sides, is planned in 2003. The Poles have discussed also acquiring some SH-2G helicopters to operate from the frigates, but nothing has been decided.
