Harpoon 4 Errata from Spain

by Alejandro Gonzales Ramos

Ed Note: Mr. Alejandro Gonzales Ramos, a longtime H4 player and correspondent, of Spain sent in a very good letter, which fortunately or unfortunately identified some missing data in Harpoon4. Here is my edited reply.

Rules Book: For wake-homing torpedo acquisition ranges, used the torpedo guidance generation table. Section 5.5.5 says to that they are used like any acoustic homing torpedo, but this will be made clearer to say that they use the same acquisition ranges as acoustic weapons.

Annex B: Regarding the missing aircraft, here are the specifications:

Annex F: The Yu-2 is the Chinese version of the RAT-52 and the entry in Annex F of SITREP #12/13 appears to be incorrect. The correct data is below. Source: Norm Friedman's 1997/98 book. 45-54VT: 2.2 nm, 39 kts, 200 kg warhead, 50 DPs, Straight runner
45-56NT: 2.2 nm, 40 kts, 200 kg warhead, 50 DPs, Straight Runner
RAT-52/Yu-2: 0.3 nm, 63 kts, 240 kg warhead, 60 DPs,
Straight Runner. Because of the torpedo's short range, the attacking aircraft must overfly the target.
Annex G3: I have never been able to find weights for the British 25mm and 30mm cannon pods. It certainly affects the load of the aircraft, but I cannot say how much they weigh. I would consider any Harrier fitted with the pods to be fully loaded, unless that's about all it carries.
Annex G4: Regarding the missing air-to-surface missiles: The Hsiung Feng II is a I/TARH&TIRH guidance weapon with a 3 rd generation seeker, a range of 2 – 43 nm, a speed of 528 knots on a cruise trajectory, flight altitude VLow. It weighs 520 kg, with a 220 kg warhead (44 dp). It has a VSmall radar signature.
The 9M17 Skorpion [AT-2 Swatter] is a Command-guided weapon with a 1st generation seeker, a range of .25 – 2.2 nm, a speed of 216 knots on a ballistic trajectory, flight altitude Low. It weighs 35 kg, with a 5 kg HEAT warhead (1 dp). It has a VSmall radar signature. Not much is known about the C101 ASM. It has a weight of about 1850 kg with a 300 kg shaped-charge warhead (60 dp). It has a speed of Mach 2 (1147 kts) and flies at low altitude, diving to 3 meters for attack and it has the option of executing a terminal maneuver to help evade defenses. It has a range of 44 miles (small for such a large missile), but I have no information on minimum range. I also have no information on its seeker generation. Based on other Chinese missiles, it could be either a 2 nd or a 3 rd -generation weapon. There is also no information about its service status. It has been exhibited at several Chinese arms show, but there is not indication that it is in service. It is not in service as of 1998.
Annex H: Regarding the missing AAMs: Sky Sword I is an IRH AAM with a 3 rd generation seeker with an ATA rating of 4.5. It has a 5.0 nm max range, a hang weight of 90 kg, a speed of 1434 kts, and is all-aspect. It is dogfight rated and is snap up/down capable. Sky Sword II is an SARH AAM with a 2 rd generation seeker with an ATA rating of 4.5. It has a 21.0 nm max range, a hang weight of 190 kg, a speed of 2000 kts, and is all-aspect. It is dogfight rated but is not snap up/down capable.
Annex L: Regarding the missing Air Radars:
Bendix 1500 SS 185 118 74 33.3 18.5
JL-7 AI radar AI 16 10 6 2.9 1.6
SR-4 radar AI 60 38 24 10.8 6
(ranges estimated)
Super Sky Ranger – Range-only radar, no search capability.
Data on the JL-7 is fairly good, but there is little known about the SR-4. I have based the Bendix 1500's characteristics on others of the Type.
