REMARKS

"FM" stands for "Fighter, Multiplace." Twelve preproduction models were built in 1938-40, tested extensively, but never ordered into full production. Slow and hard to maneuver, it was also slower than the bombers it was meant to escort. Its bombload was too small to be used as an attack aircraft.

Aux Fuel tank 1032 [Int] (400 USG capacity, adds 696 nm range)

This unusual Air Corps fighter was intended to serve as a long-range bomber escort, but the large, heavy design was slower than the bombers it was meant to escort, and not maneuverable enough to win against enemy fighters.

The US did not build this equivalent to the German Bf 110, but with better engines it might have given good service in the Pacific as an antishipping aircraft, possibly as the land based torpedo plane the Air Corps lacked - the "Torpcuda"
