Every year the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base takes about 200 Air Force majors and lieutenant colonels and runs then through a ten-month course. The officers are all hot numbers, exceptional squadron commanders and the like who must learn to think lawyer thoughts. The course takes foreign students as well as Germans, Indonesians, and in these changing times, even Russians. The course work is incredibly heavy, averaging 250 pages of reading a night, in addition to papers, briefings, and other assignments. The course is advanced not only in its thinking but also in its methods. Each student is issued a laptop computer for use in the course, and is expected to use it for much of the course work. The students' final thesis is not a paper. They turn in an IBM Toolbook application on the assigned topic.
Here is the reading list for the 1994 academic year. I hear the 1995 list will be much the same, only longer. How many have you read? I won't tell how many I've read, but it's a humbling experience.
