Most French howitzers were 5.5" types. Allied howitzers were 7-pdr types. Licornes were hybrids-a gun that fired an exploding shell, but without the high arc of a howitzer.

The Allies started the battle with an advantage in artillery. By the end of the day, the opposing artillery was nearly equal. The massed Allied guns stopped Murat's charges, and probably were responsible for most of the French casualties.
