Michael Gilbert 1947-2000

It is with extreme sadness that we note the passing of a former staff artist and friend, Michael Gilbert. During his fifty-three years, Michael was a Civil War reenactor, professional illustrator, and published designer of wargaming rules. At the time of his death his collection counted more than 300,000 military figures.

The first magazine on which Michael worked as a cartoonist was Dana Lombardy's Conflict in the 1970s. For more than twenty-five years, he was one of the editors of the Napoleonic magazine Empires, Eagles, and Lions, regaling readers with his popular cartoon series. Mike's color plates and black and white illustrations can be found in many military history and reference books.

Michael was the author, with Andre Norton, of a children's science fiction novel, The Day of the Ness. He was also a frequent contributor to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and Analog. He was art director for Worlds of If, and worked for DAW Books in both an editorial and artistic capacity. Michael is survived by his wife Sheila.
