Obituary
by Dana Lombardy
We would like to dedicate this issue to the memory of Proctor Jones, Honorary President of the Napoleonic Alliance. He was responsible for bringing to the public two vital works, Napoleon: How He Did It the memoirs of Baron Fain, First Secretary of the Emperor's Cabinet, and In Napoleon's Shadow, the memoirs of Louis-Joseph Marchand, the Valet of the Emperor from 1811-1821, making these critical insider testimonies on Napoleon available in English for the first time. His other massive book, Napoleon: An Intimate Account of the Years Of Supremacy, 1800-1814, received the 1992 Literary Award of the Napoleonic Society. In his interview in issue #1 of Napoleon, in response to our question on Napoleon's legacy, Jones said: "We can present other perspectives instead of relying on those who write from the Royalist or English point of view about the 'usurper' or the 'terrorist' or the 'tyrant.' The problem has been that too many people approach Napoleon Bonaparte the way we think he was. I think my work .... should be at least to get Napoleon, as we so like to say, 'a level playing field."' Proctor Jones was a strong supporter of our efforts from the very beginning. His generosity and vision will be sorely missed.
