Welcome back to another installment in the ongoing saga of wargaming around North America.
Our first newcomer is ... drum roll please ... the Solo Wargamers Association.
Yeah, I know they've been around for over 20 years. And yes, they are really an anti-club, since they are by definition, solo gamers. But! They are organized to share gaming ideas and expefiences, and that's what clubs are for. Their point man is Kerin Hart, editor of Lone Warrior, who dropped
me an e-mail. Your $20 initial membership gets you four quarterly issues of one of the most
widely read magazines on Magweb, and offers you entry into the brotherhood of solo gaming,
Even gamers in metropolitan areas can enjoy the contacts and ideas here. New recruits should
send their checks or inquiries to SWA at 1707 Ridge Road, Leavenworth KS 66048 or try
kennhart@kennhart.freeserve.co.uk of the UK, I was just there---enjoying the tourist sites in
London, York, and Edinburgh.
Steve Hazuka of SE Michigan Association of Gamers dropped me a note. His
Detroit area gainers have grown to 17 members but would like to recruit more. They are thinking
of starting an online miniature chat room with sessions on Sunday nights at 2100 CST. It will
probably start as an AOL only thing for now, but may expand. More details to follow, and I'll
give you updates as I plan to "attend" the meetings.
I attended this year's FALL IN! hosted by HMGS East in Gettysburg. It was lots
of fun. It's closer to my home, so die drive was shorter. And the con had the more
familiar/homey feel of the cons I started with in the 1970's than the Historicon extravaganza. I played games all day and did very little shopping. What else is new you ask? Well, venerable
editor Bill Gray is now a full colonel! Huzzah. Bob Giglio was re-elected as Prez for another
term, too. The newsletter contained an excellent article by Bill Gray on Napoleon's army in
Egypt. Keep up die great work.
The illustrious order of NOVAG warriors has elected a new king--his royal
majesty Ed Stewart. Ed has surrounded himself with the usual crowd of grognards, John
McConnell as VP, Dave Luff as Secretary, and Joerg Duenzen as Treasurer. l5mm Napoleon's
Battles continues to be a staple for us on Friday nights at the Chantilly Game Parlor, as well as Fire & Fury ACW. Our fall convention went well, though attendance was down a bit. But we
had great representation at HMGS East's Fall In!
The lads in HMGS Mid-South continue their avid wargaming. From Bill Harting's
letters one can see his wide network of friends--most of whom offer some useful tidbit of
information to the reader. Highlights included Malayan campaign ideas, thoughts following
viewing the movie Saving Private Ryan, convention events, some scale changing suggestions
(easy math), product reviews, news, and much more cool stuff.
The latest Camino Real Post lists five conventions, weekly game days, 50+
gamers, and it's all free. All Rio Grande Valley gamers should drop Don Wolff a line. Looks like they are supporting events in Colorado, too.
Historical Gamers of Indianapolis sent me a list of recent events. Tuesdays and
Saturdays remain their big days. Tire popular periods still include Advanced Squad Leader
WWII, as well as F&I War skirmish Napoleonics, Cry Havoc!, Spanish Civil War, 7YW,
Desperado, and ACW naval. I'd like to congratulate them on entering their fourth year.
HMGS Pacific Southwest is still alive and kicking. Several members went took the
pilgrimage to Historicon this year and had a great tune. They sponsored their own Mini-Wars '98
Fall Campaign in November, but no results yet.
Harry Bonham of Northwest HMGS wrote a nice article explaining some little known
facts about ACW artillery. Chris Leach expounded on the changing face of wargaming in the
Vancouver area. Seem that organized club gaining is declining in favor of garage/home games. The reasons appears to be that players feel they can put on more saudying, eye-appealing games at home than in a couple hours at the club. Interesting. Anyone else out there with this problem?
Mike Demana is a smart guy. He's editor of the HMGS Great Lakes Herald. In every
issue he seems to have some great ideas about wargaming or painting or traveling to see cool
locations. Great job. BTW, the expanded format looks great. Clinton Reffice wrote a very
interesting piece on casualties and losses in gaming and how we and computers differ in how to
represent them in a game. I'm very interested to read the second installment. News about
reenactment groups in the area, too. Overall, a very complete newsletter, and I think my current favourite.
Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance continues their fine tradition of gaming.
Another free convention will be held at Jefferson Barracks in February-what a great idea. Their
players are currently experimenting with the Warhammer Ancient Battles rules. They give them a
thumbs up, except they've added a countercharge rule which appears well thought out and necessary.
That lack has always stuck in my craw playing regular fantasy Warhammer. Good thoughts guys.
Tornado Alley HMGS continues to support area conventions. A group went to Punic
Warsanother of the fine free conventions we hear about-this time in Branson MO (tourist town).
Fort Worth Wars will go off this weekend (so 2 months ago for you), and their flagship con
Twistercon will run in March. The newsletter included a simple but thought provoing set of Samurai rules.
NASAMW, under the steady hand of Darrell Smith, continue to revise and expand the
understanding of ancient warfare. The Sept/Oct issue of Spearpoint includes Draft WRG 7.6 and
Draft DBM 2.1. Brett Drake, engineer and a all around clever fellow, offers some good ideas about making bills for home and travel. And of course, there are numerous laurel wreaths for the
tournament winners worldwide over the last couple months.
Lastly, my buddy Kevin Rounsaville has renamed his club from the Inland Empire Gaming
Association to the Secret Society of Miniature Wargamers. Their group of a dozen gamers
plays all periods, but has just begun a Classical Period campaign. Almost any period and scale is played (boats, planes, tanks, etc), and they are always "looking for a few good men."
Keep those cards and letters coming!
