Hello, and welcome another Clubs column. A new AF job has been sapping all my free time,
so I am relieved to see 200+ Napoleonic French nearly ready for basing. I've also rebased a corps of 15mm Brits a good friend Lynn Morgan loaned me so I can whup up on some froggies. Taught a little DBA to my friend Carl Agar over the weekend-seemed to enjoy it, but preferred
medievals to the ancients. Maybe another gamer in the making. This was after a long day of
painthall with our sons and some friends. Great weekend. Welt let's see what's in the mailbox.
First, I received a nice letter from my predecessor in this column, Steve Dake. He kindly
sent me a copy of his Napoleonic rules to try out, and explained some twisty parts of it.
Interesting-I'll try them out on NOVAG folks.
Stephen Leopard writes from the Lone Star Historical Miniature Gamers of San
Antonio, Texas. They play Thursdays. at 1800 first Sundays at 1200 in the Texgys Hobby
Shop. They play durn near anythin' but recently haw enjoyed DBA/DBM, Le Petite Emperor,
Hostile Aircraft, Warzone, Days of Knights, and Principles of War. They club owns many
different types of troops, ships, and aircraft. Membership is near 40 and they are looking for
more gamers with good sportsman attitudes. Interested folks can reach Stephen at 208 Sterling
browning, San Antonio TX (210) 420-6450.
Reading through the Phoenix newsletter of HMGS Midwest, I find they have lost their
convention site for Little Wars. I don't know how many of you have been to that convention, but
I have. It was my first non-California convention and I really enjoyed it. Great group-and I met Hal Thinglum there, though he probably doesn't remember. Matthew Hyke wrote a nice piece
exhorting members to get more involved in the hobby which could haw been sent to every club in
America. Less than 5% of the gamers do EVERYTHING in this hobby ... organize games, write
articles, nm games at conventions. Don't let your fear hold you back! New blood is ALWAYS
appreciated. There was also a nice news tidbit-they've recovered the propeller and drive shaft for the USS Monitor. They're trying to recover the rest but it will reside at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News VA. Cool!
Lateset word from the Gran Capitan at the US Pike and Shot Federation is some new
personnel Liking over as Editor of Reiter and tournament director. Some interesting historical
tidbits, and Nils Hedglin describing his crushing victory tactics using Scots Covenanter and
English Royalist armies. Finishing touch was a Huguenot army list for 1588 and their annual
tournament standings.
The Seven Years War Association sent along their Tricon '98 convention flyer (Oct 24-25).
Two ideas I particularly liked were reenactor demonstrations at the con, as well as a
conventionlong campaign matrix game. Food for thought, eh? Looks like 30+ events over two
days. Fun!
Much of HMGS South's latest newsletter Rebel was taken up with die Program Events Lists
(PEL) for Hurricon this past September. Lots of events and the verable Duke Siegfired as Guest of Honor. However, Dave Clyton wrote a gripping battle report on a Viking/Dark Age Battle of
Clantarf and John Marron added a detailed "Bulge" scenario for Crossfire.
Bill Gray, infamous (and talented) editor of the HMGS East newsletter is stepping down!!
They are looking for new blood to start in Jul 99. Bob Giglio was reelected as Prez of East for
another year, and Jay Hadley and Ginger Hartman will also serve. Bill Gray also penned a good
campaign setting for Napoleonic miniatures based on the board game 1814-Six Days to Glory.
And of course, I'm looking forward with gusto to Fall In! in a couple weeks. Go East!
Boo, hoo. The secret cabal star chamber of NOVAG conspired to keep me from their board
of directors. Actually, I did run, but only because John McConnell wanted someone to beat like a red-haired step child. It worked, of course. George Short has taken over as newsletter editor and is doing a super job. Gaming is going very well. We continue to play a lot Napoleon's Battles, but other games continue to crop up, and every Friday now includes an ACW game with one of our female members hosting.
The latest couple of Dispatches from HMGS Mid-South were chock full of goodies.
George Chandler offered some excellent tips on fielding and fighting Armati arinies. Scott Head
offered pages of WWI aircraft painting ideas. Theron Kuntz wrote a thought provoking article on
Fog of War in wargaming, and followed it with an article on WWR Malayan campaign ideas. Bill
Harting finished things off with a Historicon review and lots of pictures from NASHCON.
The latest Camino Real Post lists five conventions, weekly game days, 50+ gamers, and it's
all free. All Rio grande Valley gamersshould drop Don Wolff a line.
Lion's Den Wargamers; just held their Punic Wars IV convention. Lots of great games
including-you guessed it-an electric football tournament! Imagine 8 electric football boards all buzzing at once with the little figures slowly trudging their way across the painted metallic field. Brings back great childhood memories. And it was all FREE. Now that's my kind of convention. Their Full Sail campaign continues apace, and they continue to pump out scenarios and revisons for their numerous rule sets. Missouri regional gamerscan't go wrong here.
Heart of America HMGS is NO MORE. Due to some irregularities with some of its
leadership, HAHMGS has been disbanded, and a temporary organization called Great Plains
Gamers has taken its place. Hopefully things will be cleared up by the next issue of MWAN.
Nevertheless, the gamers have continued to put on stellar events like Ft Leavenworth Day in
July, Spearhead in August, and Border Wan in October. They also sent representatives to
Origins 98. Good group.
Two years old this month (Oct), Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance continues their
endless series of excellent game days and conventions. Blake Walker wrote a very thorough three
part series on gaming WWI-including rules summaries and bibliography-very nice. Tom
Sparhawk described an ingenious way to create hex maps using needlepoint materials.
Thanks to all who send me their club info-I really enjoy hearing from you. Keep it coming.
I'm on e-mail Izmud@aol.com. Hasta, la vista!
