Wargame Clubs of America

by John Stafford

You know, it's a little weird writing six months ahead of publication. I'm basting in the heat of summer as I write this, have just returned from an excellent Historicon adventure, and unless I miss my guess, you're reading this at Christmas time. Hmm. Happy Holidays! I hope you all like the new format of the Mega List. I was quite surprised to find so many states with no clubs! Especially North and South Dakota. You'd think with those long cold winters there'd be plenty of painting and gaming. Just for grins I added up the number of clubs by state. California tops the list with 21 club listings, Illinois next with 17, Texas third with 8, and Colorado and Pennsylvania in a tie for fourth with 6 each. Remember, I always want to hear about new clubs so please e-mail or snail-mail me your info-or even call and chat. I'd love to hear from you.

At this past Historicon three friends came in from out of state to play games and have a reunion. Two play in clubs in our listing, so I'll pas on their updates. Kevin Rounsaville is president of the Inland Empire Gaming Association. Their primary interests are Napoleon's Battles in 6mm and 15mm, DBM, and 18th and 19th century sailing ships. Membership has grown to about 20 players, but more are welcome. They play in the Riverside area. Terry Boldt is a member of the Colorado Historical Gamers under the leadership of Steve Weeldreyer. They play in Aurora, CO, and their primary interests are also Napoleon's Battles and 18th and 19th century sailing ships. Membership is about 50 members, and both groups are willing to try other periods and scales. Call them if you're in the area.

I just received issues 1 and 2 of Battlefield, the quarterly newsletter of HMGS West. They boast at least eleven game clubs in CA and Nevada (see Mega List), and are very active for a new HMGS. These gamers have hosted several conventions throughout California, and seem well organized under Chris Salander's leadership. All periods and scales are represented, taking one convention as an example where Aerodrome, DBA, ACW, Vietnam, pirates, Crimea, Spanish Civil War, WWII, colonial, and were played. New members or clubs should contact Chris Salander at (408) 246-6568 or PO Box 7791, Auburn CA 95604-7791.

Another new kid on the block for us is the Atlanta Historical Miniatures Society. The byline of their newsletter The Trojan Horse claims they are the "oldest and most disorganized club in Atlanta. They look pretty organized to me. Games are held every Saturday, and they attend all the local cons (Cowpens, Nashcon, etc.). Periods of interest are Armati ancients, 20mm WWII, and a strange Mexican-American-Maximillian-Juarista campaign using homemade rules. A jolly bunch. POC is Mike Frang at (770) 471-0073.

Terry Cabak sends us an update on the Lake County Rifles Wargames Group in the Mundelein and Carpentersville area of Illinois. They meet twice a month, playing mostly in 1/72 scale plastic. Ancients, medieval, Thirty Years War, French and Indian War, AWI, ACW, Napoleonics, colonial wars, WWI, WWII and an H.G. Wells War of the Worlds are all played. In 25mm they play Desperado and siege warfare. For naval, Wooden Ships and Iron Men and WWII are popular. Call or write Terry to join the gang.

The President of South Eastern Michigan Association of Gamers (SEMAG), Steve Hazuka dropped me a line asking for a plug. His 15 members play in the Detroit area once a month at a local hobby store. They are seeking new members. Give Steve a call!

Clif Castle sent along the latest Hailshot from the US Pike and Shot Federation. Lots of notes about the Cold Wars tournaments, historical notes including a letter from Cromwell to his wife. And an interesting short article about non-metallic artillery in the period (logs, paper rolls, etc.). If you like gaming in high medieval through Renaissance, drop Clif and line and sign up.

Mike Demana and his folks at HMGS Great Lakes do a great job putting together their newsletter The Herald. The latest issue balances club information and useful articles. Features included Desperado expansions, DBA tournament highlights, detailed figure reviews for Vietnam, AWI, and colonial, an excellent eastern Mediterranean ancients campaign system for DBA/DBM, another for England, and a vignette from Hannibal's wars. Good stuff.

Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance reminds folks they are dedicated to promoting local gaming in the St Louis region. They hold monthly Game Days, support all regional conventions and Heart of America HMGS events, and even held a picnic and barbecue open to all gamers this summer. Sounds like a fun and sociable group to me-sixty strong and growing.

HMGS South's newsletter Rebel Yell has a new editor Bryan Stroup. He and the over 300 members are busy. Many conventions and local events are listed. The best article is an interesting battle report from the commander's perspectives on a Napoleonic battle using the Piquet system. Sounds as if everyone enjoyed the battle. I picked up the ACW version in a trade but have yet to try it.

HMGS East did it again. An excellent Historicon, and Fall In! on the way. Afterall, at 1800 members, they are the most successful game group of all time. And reading all their correspondence in the newsletter, it appears that the leadership is very interested in the individual gamers out there, and giving them a good product. Bravo.

NOVAG continued its strong gaming tradition with a large attendance at Historicon. Several games were offered by members, including a stunning Mexican War scenario by our own President John McConnell, plus lots of general attendance. Our June Gamecon went well with about 150 attendees, and the September NOVAGCON promises to be at least as good. Napoleon's Battles continues to be the game du jour at the Game Parlor, but all periods and genres are played there and at other affiliated area stores. Le Marshall sez ... report to ze depot!

New leadership at Tornado Alley HMGS. Orval Darrow is the new Prez, an Jonathan Mendenhall is the newsletter editor. [see new contact numbers below]. Their annual TwisterCon went well, and they are looking for recruits. The latest Alert! Had a lengthy summation of Johnny Reb III changes vs. JR II for ACW enthusiasts.

Bill Harting's Dispatch for HMGS Mid-South held more useful tidbits this issue. Brett Glover's nice piece on the sailing French navy, a couple articles on WWI aviation scenarios and ideas, British naval rockets in the Napoleonic era, and of course lots of humor. I especially like the Marine joke-51 days! Also nice to hear Buck Surdu's convention went well in Texas.

Darrell Smith, the new President of The North American Society of Ancient and Medieval Wargamers said "hello" at Historicon. He's a hard worker and seems to have found an able assistant in Mark Garcia as his new editor for Spearpoint. Membership is about 275 and growing. The June/July issue held multiple DBM clarifications and players guides for all you [us?] ancients players, with additions in the following issue. Darrell wrote a scholarly article on creating a medieval Hungarian army. P.R. Gray wrote a fascinating article describing his tour of Syria, Cyprus, and other faraway places. Of course there's a plethora of tournament results and glory for the winners, as well as event announcements and web sites. Great stuff.

In the latest Camino Real Post by Don Wolff, he lists the results of a census on ancient miniature armies. Great idea-now his 50+ subscribers know what opponents can be fought!. And it's free!

It's fun to read about the Lion's Den Wargamers. Their latest newsletter reports on their avid gaming in aerial and naval combat. WWII air campaigns and a four year sailing ship campaign sound like a load of fun. Interestingly enough, they started the naval game using Avalon Hill's Wooden Ships & Iron Men rules modified for miniatures, then transitioned to Brother Aelred Glidden's As Per Margin rules from the pages of MWAN. Recently they modified them so much they renamed them Full Sail! {after Full Thrust-the sci-fi ship game). I love rule tinkering, too. Missouri regional gamers can't go wrong with this crowd.

Thanks to all who send me their club info-I really enjoy hearing from you.
