Welcome Hornets Nest War Gamers! They kindly sent me Volume 1, Issue 1 of their
newsletter announcing their formation. Jim Brokaw is the President, ably assisted by Eric
Burgess, Bob McCaskill, and Joe Roberts. They claim 16 members so far in the greater
Charlotte NC area. They have already established a game schedule for the year, and plan to
support all the major regional conventions (Historicon, Nashcon, Cold Wars, Cowpens, etc.).
Congratulations and good luck guys. If you'd like to enlist, you can reach them through Jim
Brokaw at (704) 846-1652 or Eric Burgess at 582-8482.
Our second newcomer is HMGS Midwest-welcome newest HMGS! Their newsletter The
Phoenix (once again, Volume 1, Number 1) informs us that Randy Giesey is both President and
Editor-lucky guy. His partners in this venture are VP Jeff Hammerlund, Treasurer Harold
Johnson, and Sergeant at Arms Nancy Besowshek. Nice first effort on the newsletter. Articles
included a nice piece by Graham Minshaw on the battle of Solway Moss, a Scots/English tangle
in 1542, including maps, figures, OB, and suggested special rules. They also show a complete
event list for HMGS and other cons, weekly game locations, useful internet sites, local clubs
(many of them newcomers to our Mega list below!), useful reviews, and more. Sounds like these
folks are well under way. Give Randy a jingle at (847) 215-1042 or try 1775 Ashford Circle,
Wheeling IL 60090-5100 or try Rgiesey1@aol.com.
Craig Einhorn at Pharaoh's Guard kindly sent me an e-mail to tell me they moved (see new
address below) and update on their activities. Piquet has taken them by storm, as they prefer the lack of complete control the rules simulate, making for a game more akin to real life. You find a game with them on weekends and some weeknights. Give them a call.
Don Wolff cranks out another Camino Real Post for New Mexico and surrounding area gamers.
New in this issue is the announcement of a "coordination meeting" for those who can attend to
set a game event schedule. Armati seems to be hot out there. Congratulations! They just passed the 50-subscriber mark for their FREE newsletter.
Mike Demana continues to improve the HMGS Great Lakes newsletter. Besides all the cool
useful stuff like an event calendar, local obliging hobby stores, figure reviews, and painting tips, there are some good articles. Mike's campaign description for 9th century Britain using DBA was inspiring. Jeff Bolton's review of DBM rule changes will be beneficial to many ancients
players. There was a nice scenario for WII armor in Belgium, and a well-done hypothetical story
about Hannibal's decision to invade Gaul. Support for local and national cons continue
(CAPCON, Peninsula Campaigns, Pro or Con, etc.). Anyone near the Great Lakes would be
wise to join up.
According to The Penny Whistle Lion's Den Wargamers have produced another game-"Going
the Distance Motor Dice Racing." This is for all you NASCAR fans, and the newsletter included
a players reference sheet for Xeroxing. Short newsletter this month!
Duke Robinson, El Presidente of the Confederation of Friends, wrote a nice letter. He
describes their 1809 Napoleonics campaign covering all forces and fronts. They use the Victory
Games 1809 game board for a map, campaign rules from MWAN #86 by David Rhay (alright!),
and lots of 15mm figures. They have played through twice, both times resulting in a minor
French victory after a long slugfest and many casualties. They use a blind draw system to select players for command to fight in their tournaments, thereby increasing the "unpreparedness" of the commander. Sounds fun Duke. Thanks for the note.
Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance presses on with their excellent gaming tradition. Their
Shamrock Con went well in March, and they supported HMGS Mid-West's Little Wars, and
Egyptian Campaigns at SIU Carbondale. HA HMGS's Border Wars and a dozen other events are
also on the calendar. Whew! This is over and above all the games at local hobby stores like the Hobby Shop and Games, Crafts, Hobbies and Stuff. Blake Walker also wrote an interesting
piece describing the British follies in Africa in the 19th century, including some rules discussions and suggestions. Missouri and Illinois gamers can't go wrong here..
Sounds as if the Heart of America HMGS crowd had another excellent Border Wars
convention-this time at a new venue outside Kansas City-in St Louis. Reports claim over 100
attendees, and excellent facility, and plenty of breathtaking games and scenery. They'll hold a
repeat performance this October. By the time you read this their other con, Call to Arms, will
have also occurred-wish I had an excuse to get there-it's been too many years. These folks
are very friendly and put on a great show.
As I read the latest "Rebel Yell" from HMGS South, I noted that the Editor, Craig Martelle was miffed that I gave credit for the nice newsletter to the club president, Bill Hogan, rather than the almighty editor. Sorry about the slip Craig-but no whining. However, the newsletter does look great. The letters included some interesting ideas such as: a note on how to mount and protect flags, Bob Jones announcing the release of Piquet II and his Horse & Musket version called Cap & Ball at Historicon, several descriptions of the wonders seen and experienced at Siege of Augusta, and others wrote good product reviews. Their spring convention RECON! Will have already passed as you read this (April), but the events sounded promising, with an expected
crowd of 300. Brent Oman offered excellent advice on how to take and hold a town. Lance
Gamble made an interesting system to rate/cost DBA troops, with thoughts for DBM. Don't
forget the trivia page, classifieds, event lists, and more. Contact Bill or Craig to get with their program.
Much of the HMGS East newsletter was filled with business this time around (accounting, rules, etc.)! Fortunately for us, they continue with their superb conventions. Fall In! seems to have been a success at Gettysburg and will be repeated-they're negotiating a 5-year contract. Bill Gray added a thorough article on the 1792 Battle of Jemmapes in Belgium (French vs. Austrians), including history, OB, and bibliography (I really appreciate the bibliographies so
I can do further research-nice job). No local club news, but Bob Giglio (Pres) is looking for some hired hands to help run the conventions. Want to enlist? He'd be glad to have you.
I'm looking forward to NOVAG's Gameday II next weekend. The usual gang of jovial gamers
and thoughtful scenarios will be present, as well as dealers and flea marketeers. Our fearless Pres John McConnell is preparing his 25mm Mexican War for Historicon-he's working on the castle
for Chapultepec. Faron Betchley, proprietor of the fairly new hobby shop Little Wars, has
crafted some interesting expansions for FULL THRUST-space warfare. Of course our
Napoleon's Battles campaign continues, with the Allies getting thumped at this point. We played
a pick-up game last night, and Mark and Brian had the pleasure of destroying my Russian
Corps-oops! David Bell has drafted up a Tunnel Scenario for Necromunda (printed in the
Novag News). While I'm not interested in the fantasy street punk stuff, the mechanics looked
easily transferable to WWII or Vietnam city/tunnel fighting. Virginia and Maryland gamers
would do well to drop in on us and join the fun.
News from Bill Harting at HMGS Mid-South featured a view of conventions from a Brit's
perspective (Chris Scott). High points included his praise for the quality of the terrain, research, and playability for newcomers and veterans alike. However, he feels Brits have advantages in lower prices for figure "over there", and more "competitions" to "thrash" each other rather than the larger number of pick up games here. Steve Phenow spells out some organizational tips for running Romans in Armati. A report from Millenium 1997 in Austin TX had 300 attendees with lots of historical events. Other useful stuff included a set of simple AWI rules, info on the Pfalz DIII fighter, the T-34/85, and more. Send Bill your money and join up-you'll be glad you did.
Nice to hear from the folks at NASAMW (a.k.a. the Society). As usual, they are keeping tabs on the far corners of the ancient gaming world. The current issues of Spearpoint are so much better than what they were several years ago when I first subscribed I can't emphasize it enough. Articles, refights, tournaments, army lists, etc. for a number of ancient army rules pack these issues (e.g. WRG 7.5, DBA, DBM, Classical Hack et al, Armati, Medieval Warfare (Terry
Gore's new game), and Tactica). The articles are first rate, too. Lynne Viverito (another woman gamer-hurrah!) penned an informative piece on the Bayeaux Tapestry, Scott Holder defined
which armies can use boats in WRG tournaments, Terry Gore described the genesis of his new
medieval rules (gotta try them-I love Dark Age), Tom McMillen sets out a good Trojan War
scenario, Phil Viverito (the Hack rules) wrote an great article on Roman/German army
organizations with suggested OBs, and Craig Scott presents in astonishing detail a Late
Achemenid Persian army list, complete with 37 bibliographic sources! Awesome! Plus, of
course, lots of battle write-ups, tournament results, and lists of award winners and upcoming
events. Whew. That reminds me, I have Carthaginians sitting on my basement table waiting for
paint..NASAMW's worth $18 a year even if you only read the newsletter and never even play
in one of their well-run tournaments.
Fini! Thanks to everyone who wrote, called, or sent their newsletter along-we have grown
tremendously over the past two years. Keep it coming. I'm on e-mail Izmud@aol.com. Ciao!
