Review of Donnington Miniatures 15mm new releases,
Mongols and Casualties of War

Donnington are often thought of as the Ancients experts, and their research is second to none. Their 56 page catalogue contains a wealth of ranges however, from Etruscans right down to ACW. You may buy your figures singly from Donnington too. This new release is called "Casualties of War." I will list the figures, comment and draw some of them, not to scale.

DD1 Roman, mailshirt, helmet, Iying on back. Mouth open, helmet half off, left knee up.

DD2 Hellenistic, cuirass, helmet Iying on back, chin to the sky, right knee up.

DD3 Celt, broken sword, shield, limed hair, Iying on back. Still grasping his broken sword thinly.

DD4 Barbarian, tunic, face down. A mop of hair, pot helmet by his left armpit.

DD5 Asiatic, tunic, bow, Iying on back. Half Iying on his bow.

DD6 Imperial Roman legionary, Iyimg on back, lorica segmentata, pteruges, small crest on helmet.

DD7 Parthian cataphract, Iying on side.

DD8 Late Roman infantryman Iying on face.

DD9 Late Roman cavalryman Iying on side.

DD10 Sassanid clibinarius, shield, Iying on back. Quiver under his right arm. Mail up to his eyes.

DD11 Gothic cavalryman, helmet, shield, Iying on face, shield battered~acked, cloak draped over arm.

DD12 Arab/Moslem, hair loose, quiver, Iying on back. Hair spread out like a fan. Left knee up. Bowcase under his left elbow.

DD13 Crusader infantryman, shield, Iying on face. Kite shield, spear under him.

DD14 Crusader knight, mail and surcoat, Iying on back. Flat topped helmet with "breathers" - an indescribable air of "at his last gasp."

DD15 Medieval horse (suitable for eastern, steppe or light horse). Small axe on saddle bag, legs splayed as if still trotting.

DD16 Medieval horse, armoured, scale armour. Looks like an Eastern Kipchak horse to me. Pitifully raising its head and neck.

DD17 17th Century heavy horse, pistols in holsters. Lying on its side. Pretty dead looking.

DD18 17th Century musketeer, felt hat, Iying on face. Apostles, sword, snapsack, boots, Iying on his musket.

DD19 Late 16th/early 17th century pikeman, morion helmet. Provide own pike, on his back, legs crossed at the ankle. High comb on his helmet.

DD20 17th century cavalryman, felt hat, Iying on face. Carbine sling and clip, bucket boots. I'd say he was Iying on his side, long hair.

Now for another release: Mongols (remainder)

MOC13 Guard/Touman, lamellar coat, firing bow, plumed helmet, shield slung.

MOC14 Guard/Touman, not sent.

MOC21 Archer, coat, loading bow, hand on arrows in quiver, felt hat. A great group of figures. Horses

MOH1 Horse trotting with head up.

MOH3 Fully armoured horse trotting.

MOH4 Fully armoured horse running. These last two look just like the Khitan horses of the Sung period of China about 1100. I have an illustration of the Lady Wen~hi being captured and taken to Mongolia (this was in the Han period but the artist set He scene in his own time).

MOH5 Camel (suitable for drummer and standard bearer), 19p.

Now a few P.B.l. Infantry

MOF4 Dismounted Human standard bearer, single tail standard, bow, helmet, round

MOF5 Dismounted guard/Touman, lamellar coat, lance, bow, plumed helmet, round shield.

MOF6 Dismounted guard/Touman, lamellar coat, flung bow, lance slung, helmet, shield slung.

MOF7 Dismounted Guard/Touman officer, lamellar coat, bow, helmet, round shield.

MOF8 Dismounted officer/archer, long coat, waving sword, helmet with clod neck guard,

MOF10 Dismounted archer, coat, loading bow, felt hat. A tough looking bunch and well researched kit.

Plus MOA1 (Not on Be list as I write) This is a pack saddle covered in arms and impedimenta. If should be for the camel I think as Be load is so great. It also fits the camel very well. Some drawings now, not to scale. If you don't see what you want, send for samples to Donnington.
