The Polish Crown Army

The Swedish and German sources contain very little information about thc Polish Crown Amly and its OOB. The numbers given varies from 6000 to 20,000 but the lattcr figure probably includes all followers to the horsemen and probably the Crown Army at Kliszow numbered about 8000 men.

The only statement about its composition is an eyewitness-account from a Swedish officer which states that it included "9 Companies Hussars and 30 Companies Panzars". These units were probably supplemented with great numbers of more irregular troops such as Cossacks and tartars. It consisted probably almost only of cavalry, but seems to have included some artillery as well, since the little amount Polish text which we have managed to decipher states that the Duke of Holstein was killed by a Polish artillery shot. The same text also tells that during the GNW, the lance was reintroduced for the Hussars and they probably used the same almost medieval tactics they had used against the Swedes in the mid 17th century.
