In a separate article I described how I had found a troop roster for Napoleon's Battles on the Internet, wound up revising it, and presented a version for small and medium sized scenarios. This article presents a roster for the large scenarios.
A brief recap: I tallied figure totals for each scenario (in tallying the figure totals, I included figures on command stands and artillery stands; my tally may not agree with a tally of just infantry and cavalry figures) and arbitrarily broke them into four categories. Small scenarios were those with a total of 600 or less figures. I assigned the medium category to scenarios with a combined total of between 600 to 1200 figures. Large scenarios were those with between 1200 and 2400 figures. "Monster" scenarios were those with a total of over 2400 figures (an example is Borodino with a total of 2494 figures).
Fifteen of the 25 "official" scenarios fell in the small and medium categories, included all the major nationalities, and covered all the Peninsular Campaign scenarios (an area of personal interest). The small and medium sized scenarios are: #1-Revolutionary Ardor (1794), #2-Austrians at Bay (1809), #3-Marengo, #4-Auerstadt, #6-Talavera, #9-Valmy, #11-Corunna, #13-Ocano, #14-Salamanca, #16Craonne, #17- 1814 Demonstration Game, #18-Villa Costa (COURIER Issue 58), #19Quatre Bras (AVALON HILL GENERAL Issue 26-6), #22-Vimiero, and #24-Albuera.
Of the remaining 10 scenarios, seven are in the large category. Once again all the major nationalities are represented. The battles covered are all "main theater" battles (the scenarios for outlying theaters such as the Iberian Peninsula and the Italian Peninsula do not involve such large forces). The large scenarios are: #5-Eylau, #8-Waterloo, #10-Friedland, #12 -Aspern- Es sling, #20Ligny demonstration game (AVALON HILL GENERAL Issue 26-6), #21-Austerlitz, and #25-Lutzen.
The three remaining scenarios involve really large forces and I feel they are definitely club projects. They are #7-Borodino, #15-Leipzig, and #23-Wagram. I will not be presenting a roster for these "monster" scenarios.
The roster format for the large scenarios is the same as the roster I previously presented for the small and medium sized scenarios. For each nationality I identify the total number of figures needed. The commander stand types are listed first followed by all cavalry units, then all infantry units, and finishing with all artillery types. Each listing presents the unit's title, NB abbreviation, total number of figures (and gun models), the total number of infantry/cavalry units or commander/artillery stands, the distribution of unit sizes within that total, and the scenario numbers where the unit type is used. Alternate information is given in brackets with a note explaining the basis for the alternate. Other notes are given in parentheses.
Some example listings:
French Line Infantry (FrLN) 504 figures; 22 units; 2x7s, 6x6s, 10x5s, 4x4s; # 5, 8, 10, 12, 20, 21, 25 (Includes FrVLN, FrPLN, & FrMLN.)
This means that a total of 504 French Line Infantry figures organized into 22 units will be sufficient figures for you to field the units used in Scenarios 5, 8, 10, 12, 20, 21, and 25. The "2x7s, 6x6s, lOx5s, and 4x4s" means the figures are organized into "2 units of 7 stands each, 6 units of 6 stands each, 10 units of 5 stands, and 4 units of 4 stands." The parenthetical note explains that variants of French Line Infantry units called for in one or more of the scenarios are included in the total. In this case the uniforms can be identical, but the performance may vary due to differing levels of training and experience.
Dutch-Belgian Commanders 5 figures; 4 stands; 1x2f, 3x1f; # 8
This means that 5 Dutch-Belgian command figures on four command stands are sufficient to play Scenario 8 (Waterloo). The "lx2f, 3xlf" means 1 command stand contains 2 figures (and should be sized accordingly) and the remaining three figures are each mounted on a 1 figure command stand.
Prussian 6-lb Horse Artillery (Pr6#) 18 figures, 9 guns; 9 stands; # 5, 8, 20, 25
This means that having 18 Prussian Horse Artillery crew figures with 9 gun models mounted on 9 stands will cover the required 6-lb artillery units for the four scenarios listed.
The total number of figures for each listing is based on the largest number used in any of the pertinent scenarios. Required unit sizes can vary quite a bit from scenario to scenario. I have assumed that stands of a given type are not unit specific (i.e., they are interchangeable between units). If the dominating scenario called for a lot of small units and few large units, I assumed that large units in other scenarios could be formed from stands from excess smaller units. If you have painted units with unique and distinctive markings, you may need to paint more figures than listed in the roster to account for these units having stands that are not interchangeable with other units.
In addition to the roster, I have prepare a table of the French, Prussian, and Russian forces required by the large scenarios. The table uses a similar format to the roster and should be self-evident. Seeing the forces required by each scenario for these three nationalities allows a gamer more discretion as to how to tailor make an army. All the other nationalities are involved in only one or two scenarios. For example, the Austrians are only in two scenarios and Aspern-Essling requires quite a bit more Austrian figures than Austerlitz.
Enjoy!!!
