In trying to set up a small French army for the Waterloo campaign consisting of units that also fought in the Spanish Peninsula, the problem was to find a French-Allied unit that qualified. For the Peninsula, it was easy. It seems every French ally and his brother had a contingent that served there - not quite but a great many. For Waterloo, Rene North in his REGIMENTS AT WATERLOO (1971), page 65, states that one battalion of the 2nd Swiss Regiment was in Vandamme's III Corps, Tenth Division, and was brigaded with the 22nd and the 70th Line Regiments. This would make a neat unit what with the Swiss red coats and dark blue facings. Was the 2nd Swiss Regiment in Spain? Commandant Henry Lachouque's NAPOLEON'S WAR IN SPAIN, page 57, fig 9, the 2nd Swiss Regiment in 1808 in the Peninsula. So now we need confirmation of the Swiss in the Waterloo Campaign. Hyde Kelly's THE BATTLE OF WAVRE AND GROUCHY'S RETREAT (1905) page 57 shows the tenth Division consisted of the 22nd, 34th, 70th & 88th Regiments of the line. No mention of the Swiss. Well..ah ha! TRADITION magazine had a Waterloo edition in 1965, No. 9 on page 42 it lists the 10th Division's units: 34, 88, 22 and 70th Regt's of the Line. No mention of the Swiss. SO WHAT NOW? Were the Swiss in the Waterloo Campaign or not? Philip Haythornthwaite in UNIFORMS OF WATERLOO (1974) on plate 64 shows the 2nd Swiss Regt and on page 152 tells of it's action at Wavre. Commandant Lachouque in WATERLOO (1972) page 54 shows the 2nd Swiss in the 10th Division in the campaign. Life is complete, paint away!
