Miniatures for the Great Mutiny

15mm and 25mm

By Stephen Lawrence

Just one more little article for those of you who are now filled with the burning desire for the Great Mutiny. This article will give some idea as to what is available for the Great Mutiny in the area of miniatures.

15mm - As far as I have been able to figure out, there is only one manufacturer in this scale. This is Lancashire Games of England. I have not seen any of their figures except in photos, but my only comment is that they have that "alude" problem - the rifle barrels are too stocky and short. The listings I have seen contained no cavalry but I am sure they will make some.

25mm - There are several manufacturers in this scale. I will cover them individually.

MINIFIGS - There are some useful types here, although not always as what they are labeled. There are three British infantrymen: firing (3 standing and 3 kneeling ; advancing; and officers (2 line 2 Highlander); and two in Poshteen coats. These are useful for almost any British infantry not wearing the dress uniform. There are also three types of Mutineer infantry: dress uniform advancing, in Dhoty (actually loyal Madras infantry unless the fishmouth ball is removed from the headgear), and officers (3 in dress uniform and 3 Madras). There are five types of cavalry: British - Dragoons (or Hussars), light dragoons, and lancers (these have limited usefulness as they aren't in the normal battledress for the mutiny except that dragoons - the Lancers are actually in the tschapska); and two native types - Bengal Native Light Cavalry ("Pandies" one and all) and Bengal irregular light cavalry who served both sides depending on the particular unit (these are not usable as Skinners Horse). There are no artillery or budmashes in this line. Prices $6.50 for 6 infantry; $5.50 for 3 cavalry.

WARGAMES FOUNDRY - The most extensive line of Mutiny figures to date. These are both well cost and extensive in scope.

    British/Loyal Forces:
20 British infantry 15 British infantry officers, ensigns and drummers 5 Highlanders (perfect as the 93rd) and one officer 3 Naval Brigade and 1 Naval officer 5 Sikh infantry (Punjabi and Afghani also) 3 Goorkha infantry (perfect as the 2nd Sidmoor Bn) 1 Madras infantry 1 officer and 1 trooper - Hussars (in pillbox & pugri) 1 officer and 1 trooper - light dragoons (cap & havelock) 1 officer & 1 trooper - lancers (pillbox & havelock) 1 officer & 1 trooper - dragoons (dress uniform) 1 irregular lancer (in turban) 1 horse artillery crew (4 figures in pillbox) 1 field artillery crew (4 figures in pillbox & havelock) 1 horse artillery limber (6 horses, 2 riders, 2 outriders 1-field artillery limber (6 horses, 2 riders, 2 outriders) 1 Elephant draw siege gun, (elephant, mahout, rider, man on foot, limber & gun)

    Mutineers:

11 mutineer infantry 6 mutineer officers & buglers 8 mutineer cavalrymen (4 in turban, 4 in skull cap) 1 artillery crew (4 figures) 1 limber (4 horses, 2 riders, 2 outriders)

    Noble Guard Units:

3 soldiers with matchlocks 1 Rajah's elephant (with mahout & Rajah)

    Badmashes:

      12 badmashes (men & women, sword, spear, lati, stone,etc) 3 fanatic warriors (2 ghnzis & 1 hindu)

    Other Figures:

4 English ladies (1 fainting, 1 drinking tea, 1 loading, 1 stoic) 3 natives (2 porters, 1 standing) 1 bhisti (water carrier) 6 specials (5 dead & 1 man supporting wounded comrade) 1 Dhoolie set (wounded Englishman, 4 bearers, dhoolie) 1 field gun (may be assembled as either 6 or 9 lber)

    Horses:

4 European horses 2 native horses

There is one glaring type missing. The 60th King's Royal Rifle Corps, a unit which participated in many battles. This unit may be acquired from any Crimean war range line, using the rifleman and rifles officer figures. This line is beautiful, but expensive:

      Infantry & riders - $1.10 each Elephant siege gun - $18.00 British foot limber - $15.00 Horses - $1.30 Mutineer limber - $12.00 Horse limber - $9.00 Dhoolie bearer set - $7.25

Hopefully this will help you in finding out what one needs for the Mutiny. Thinks again for your time and patience.
