Aircraft vs. Aircraft

Book Review

by Jeff Jones

This book (by Norman Franks, $19.95) is a wholly new look at the evolution of air warfare, from dogfighting maneuvers devised during WWI and II to the sophisticated weaponry used during the Falklands crisis, the Middle East and Vietnam Wars. Unique in format, this lavishly full-color, illustrated book combines over 60 full-color panoramas and photographs with detailed charts and diagrams to trace the developments of combat tactics, strategy and equipment covering the major battles from the European and Pacific fronts to Vietnam and the Middle East.

Aircraft vs Aircrat breaks down the complex maneuvers of the air forces of the U.S. England, Germany, Japan and Isreal, to reveal the fighter pilots use of tactics such as the Thach weave, and many others. Ever since the first airplane proved it's value in WWI, the fighter pilot has emerged as the star in battle, Aircraft vs. Aircraft profiles such legendary heroes as the famed "Red Baron" von Richthofen, Eddie Rickenbacker, Saburo Sakai and Albert Ball to re-create the dangerous and exciting world in which they lived and died. This fascinating, "pilot's eye" view of the battles for air supremacy is must reading for all lovers of military history.
