And Mini Reviews

by George Grove

1. Good news for all Zulu fanatics who have not been able to get a copy of Donald R. Morris's "The Washing of the Spears". It has now been reprinted in both trade paperback and hard cover. This book is still considered by many as the best single work on the 1879 Zulu war and the rise of the Zulu nation. If you are in to Zulus and do not get this book, you should be knocked in the head with a knobkerrie! I think the price on the paperback edition is $12.95; for the hardcover - $24.95. Both were available at Articles of War, 8806 Bronx Ave., Skokie, IL 60077.

2. The above has just issued their new book catalog #46; many good books on the north-west frontier and the Matabele and Mashon rebellions of 1896, Napoleonic wars, and 10 pages on WW II. I would think a dollar or two would get you their new listings.

3. Two other books that I hear asked about or see on want lists are Michael Barthorp's "The North-west Frontier" and Martin Windrow's "Uniforms of the French Foreign Legion 1831 to 1981" have been reprinted in paper in England. Keep your eyes open. I think that they will be available in the U.S. soon.

4. I have just finished Thomas Pakenham's "The Boer War" and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the 1899-1902 Boer war.

5. Mini-Review: The Savage Wars: British Campaigns in Africa 1870-1920 by Lawrence James.

Nice little volume for someone wanting a quick look at British involvement in Africa. The Sudan campaigns and the Zulu war are covered lightly, as much has been written on these elsewhere. The main strength of the book is its coverage of British actions in west, east and central Africa plus good coverage on the Boer war. Many good small action reports on these little known British expeditions. Read the sections on food and pay for the average trooper and you will never blame your little khaki clad troopers for fleeing from the enemy again. Many seldom seen photographs and five maps make this a very nice book, highly recommended.
