This article presents an introduction to a scenario for a medieval English siege which is simple and more for attracting newcomers to the hobby. It should be ready for the 8th Historical Weekend in October in Milwaukee. OUTLINE: The Red Baron is beseiging the Blue baron's castle with his henchmen for reasons unknown to us at this time. The Blue Baron's Duke is out on campaign and will arrive in about 15 days to break the siege, Red forces are to take the castle with the fewest basualties as possible. Blue is to hold out as long as they can and cause as many casualties as possible, TIME PERIOD: Somewhere between 1050 AD and 1450 AD. PLACE: Somewhere in England. Specifics are not important because this scenario was probably done many times during that time period. Players will be considered landed knights in the service to their Lord and will be asked to bring up to ten knights, or armored figures, and up to 50 men at arms or peasants. If they don't have figures to bring I am doing to try to have enough of my own to outfit several players, Forces will be divided up just prior to the game and will heavily favor the attacker with odds of about 4;1. There will be two victories in the game; Team and Pex'sonitl., Personal victory is the number of enemy killed by your unit divided by the size of your force divided by the number of figures on the board, This way, a small unit can win if it is more aggressive than a larger unit: Team victory is for the side that accomplishes it's goals. Tentative as follows;
Defender Substantial Victory: Cause 2X casualties received (you can die to the last man and still win). Defender Marginal Victory: Cause more casualties than received: Attacker Substantial Victory: Take castle and cause more casualties than received. Attacker Decisive Victory: Take castle and cause 2X more casualties. A one page rule system will be used, They should be simple enough for beginners and quick enough for experienced gamers to not get bored. The castle is home built with one foot wall sections that interlock so it can be of any size needed. Seige equipment will be provided. Game length should be around 3-6 hours depending upon the number of players but if a noon start time is used, there shouldn't be any problems if it runs over. A prize, if given, will be for Personal Victory. I am going to talk to a few dealers for a special prize of three or four figures to new gamers who do well to get them interested in the hobby. (Editor's Note: This is the type of thing we need to do more of in our hobby at conventions to attract newcomers. Such a game as described above, would attract fantasy individuals because of the period and the setup sounds good as well. The idea about providing players (new ones) with some figures is one that Greg Novak has done for a long time and seems to hold merit. I hope that Nick will let us know what the result was as far as attracting newcomers is concerned. Let MWAN know if you are involved in any activities which may assist the hobby as a whole).
