Hal asked me to review the new line of medievals put out by Falcon Miniatures, Suite 102, 1 High street, Medford, MASS., 02155. The samples I looked at consisted of one of each of the figures, three types of shields, and various helmets for the knights. Overall I found these castings to be of very high quality. There was little or no flash (that means I had to look very hard to find any). The detailing is very sharp and the figures should be easy to paint. The figures are of the 1300-1460 period (approximately) and consist of the following castings. M-1010: Bowman in helmet and M-1011: Bowman in cap. Beth of these are carrying the longbow and a dagger. They could be armored with padding under their shirts or no padding. 14-1012 and 14-1013 Crossbowmans One has a helmet and mail coif while the other has a kettle hat and taped hood. M-1014 and 141015 peasant levies: One in hat and layered clothes while the other is typical of the period. 9-1007 and M-1008 Men-at-arms: Both of these are the latest style (approximately 1460). The others are closer to 1300 in dross and armor. The knights consist of M-1001 charging, 14-1002 attacking, and M-1003 at ready. These are ail mounted and wearing chain armor and surcoat plus mail coif. 14-1003 came with a tappered horse while the others had more open horse furniture. M-1004 and M1006 are dismounted counterparts for these. All of these could be used from 1200-1350. Also, M-1005 Knight on feet in plate of c 1350. Finally there is a very nice mounted man-at-arms in quilted gambeson, mail hauberk and helmet of c 1460. As you can see, there is quite a variety of figures. To increase the variety, the knights come headless and shieldless. Falcon has sets of 20 helms which seem to match many of the helms in the Osprey books. They also have a well detailed crusader helm. The shields are the truncated kite shield, a plain heater shield, and a heater with an embossed dragon. Prices are $4.00 for 6 foot or 3 mounted, foot knights for .75 and mounted knights for $1.50.
