If you use a felt ground sheet and don't want to build raised earth-works, simple do a one dimensional ariel view in felt. I have used this system for gullies, trenches, small foxhelds, heavy weapons pits and shell holes. These may simply be put on hills to save having to build two sets of hills. This felt terrain takes much less work than raised trenches, plus, being lighter, it takes up much less space. To make earth works you need dark brown and earth color felt. If you wish to make main battle trenches, with fire steps, use a third reasonable color for them (I used goldfish felt). For the deep parts or slit trenches, I use dark brown felt cut to the length, shape and width I want. For shell holes and weapons pits, I used a larger earth color piece with the dark brown piece glued on so the pits or holes seem to have an earth border. For main battle trenches make the first dark brown cut out large enough in width to allow you to glue on the contrasting fire step to the proper side (When using figures in these main trenches, if they are on the brown trench they are considered completely under cover). For gullies, make a dark brown, cut out the center leaving the sides the width of what you would like the gully to be in depth. Examples are illustrated below:
