1) MWAN member Rafe Garza of Joliet, Illinois, won the WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN tournament at Origins. Rafe has done some very interesting things with 25mm Colonials including a great Zulu village at LITTLE WARS. 2) Bill Hargrave, a long-time MWAN subscriber and now an MWAN advertiser, had a very nice article on his involvement in the hobby, as well as his hobby shop in the INDIANAPOLIS STAR Bill has over 50,000 figures in his shop which should make him one of the largest suppliers in the midwest, if not the country Greg Novak has been to Bill's shop and reported that he has a most impressive array of wargames figures Bill has been sponsoring a painting competition the last few years and has drawn a lot of attention to the hobby because of it. 3) The September hospital game (Oak Forest Hospital, 15900 South Cicero, Oak Forest Illinois, featured my Isandhlwana game We had twenty-four gamers present and the game turned out quite well Bob Pavik was kind enough to send me sore pictures of the battle and one of them will be reproduced in this issue (hope it turns out well). The schedule for the rest of 1985 is as follows:
December 13th: John Duffy (American Rev) and Greg Novak (Texas War of Independance) We will need games for 1986 so contact me if interested in hosting one. The games start at 7:30 and run until over. Newcomers are more than welcome. Gamers are welcomed to bring items to be sold or traded at any time. The January game will feature Greg Principato and a SWORD AND THE FLAME game. If we continue to attract alot of gamers, we may have to go to a third game which may be difficult as regards table space. Does anyone have any ideas? 4) Greg Principato brought some geomorphic terrain pieces to the last hospital game that were most impressive. He reports they are easy to make. I would go so far as to say they are about the best I have seen. What about an article on making them, Greg, there appears to be a lot of interest in making effective terrain. 5) Howard Whitehouse of Savannah, Georgia, made a visit home to England in early September. His CHEROKEE postal game is heating up and he reports that a number of MWAN members joined the campaign following the CHEROKEE article several issues ago. Howardhad an article, THE RETREAT FROM MOSCOW: AN AFTER-DINNER GAME TO BE PLAYED BEFORE DINNER FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF GENTLEMEN OF LIMITED DIGNITY printed in the June, 1985 issue of THE NUGGET. 6) Walt LeBeque of Mason, Illinois, is putting together an army for the Sudan. Walt became interested in wargaming as a result of his son getting involved in the hobby. He is quite an authority on British uniforms for the period. 7) MWAN member Ned Zuparko of Los Gatos, California spent several weeks in England and Scotland in August working with George Jefferies on the Napoleonic rules that they have been developing for several years. I am quite anxious to see a copy of these rules as they seem to hold the potential for advancing rules writing quite a bit. 8) Jerry Webster of Chicago, Illinois, a long-time boardgamer and miniatures player, although not a miniatures painter, finally broke down and purchased a supply of the Ral Partha Zulus, a fine line, and tried his hand at painting. He brought his figures to the last hospital game and did a most impressive job. The first figures I ever painted were ten French 25mm Minifig fusiliers and I painted each of them a different color. It is good to see previously nonpainters get into the act. I hope to have Jerry's article on the Isandhlwana gene for this issue. I had intended on writing it myself, however, when the game was finished, I realized that I had very little idea of what actually happened as I was so busy running the game. By the way, if anyone wants a copy of the first draft of the Isandhlwana rules, I will send it to them for $1.00 to cover postage and copying costs. I plan on printing then in number four or five of this volume. 9) Jim Torello of Cicero, Illinois, brought in same of his WWII 1/285th Micro armor to the last hospital game. Very nice paint job! What about an article on painting 1/285 scale, Jim? 10) Greg Novak's fine efforts getting historical miniatures gamers in the central Illinois area together via his CENTRAL ILLINOIS TABLE-TOP WARRIORS (CITW) continue to pay off. The group, started just under two years ago, has some 70 members at present. They schedule games on a monthly basis at different sites 11) Elsewhere in the publishing department, Lynn Bodin had his article THE DICE DILEMMA IN THE SWORD AND THE FLAME FIRING in the HELIOGRAPH; Bob Pavik wrote anarticle on GERMAN SOUTH WEST AFRICA in the same issue. Paddy Griffith wrote NAPOLEONIC FIGHTING IN WOODS AND VILLAGES for Vol. Vl, No. I of THE COURIER, which also featured an article by Howard Whitehouse entitled EXPANDING THE DIVISIONAL BATTLE. In case newsubscribers are wondering why items such as the above are mentioned, it is being done to recognize MWAN members who write for wargaming publications.
