(Editor's Note: Sometime ago I asked for information on Bashi-Bazouk uniform details and Mark was kind enough to forward the following information. I thought someone else may be able to use it as well.) The following uniform is from the March, 1981 issue of MILITARY MODELLING article on the zouave-style of uniform. The figure is listed as a Bashi-Bazouk infantry man in the Sudan, 1883. For cavalry. I was going to use the 1877 Turkish uniform since Egypt was part ofthe Turkish empire and the Bashi-Bazouks were recruited from various parts of the empire. Indeed all the commands, titles and many officers were Turkish. This consisted of darkblue zouave uniform, i.e.jacket, shirt, pants, stockings all dark blue with red sash. Trim on the jacket is yellow for the 1st regiment in a brigade and red for the rest. The fez is red with a black tassel, belts were black, and haversacks white. This is from Vol. 8, #2 of SAVAGE AND SOLDIERS from an article on the Turkish army. The same article states that Balkan Bashi-Bazouks "wore a variety of colored and embroidered bests over silk sashes, white linen shirts and trousers. Fezes were red, turbands were usually multi- colored and shoes where often red "".
