The Heliograph is required reading for Colonial gamers and is moving into other areas besides TSATF although Tony still will produce articles on this fine rules set. Lots of info on Colonial figures, rules sets, books, etc., as well as fine articles. Number 26 had an Boxer article by Lynn Bodin and one written by myself on my Isandhlwana project. Paul Hinson, MWAN subscriber, had an article in #27 on Colonial Warfare in Burma, and I believe Tony wrote one on Modifications for Big TSAF games. Number 28 carried my Rorke's Drift rules in their entirety. A fine publication! Sauve Qui Peut! - Edi Birsan, 950 Alla Avenue, Concord, CA, 94518, $1 for 3 issues. A well-done publication dealing specifically with SYW period and lovingly produced by Bill and his wife Dorothy (Why won't my wife type up MWAN?). Vol. 2, #3 had a fine article by Bill on North American Indian and Colonial Clothing and Organization, a wargame report by MWAN subscriber, Tony Adams, Russian army organization by Bill, as well as many other fine articles on this interesting period. Bill also just published the SYW Association Membership Directory. His group has grown a lot since it started three years ago. Military Modeling - Available from most hobby stores as well MWAN advertisers, $3.50 per individual issue in USA. I always enjoy this magazine just for the great ads and Stuart Asquith's column on wargaming "Observation Post". They usually have good articles on scratch building various types of buildings and quite a bit of information on organization and painting units. The May, 85 issue has an article on The Siege of Vienna with good color pictures of the Turkish army which is followed up in the June issue. Also in June are uniform details on Uruguayan 1916 uniforms (I hope Greg Novak doesn't see this, he'll build an army of them). July issue has a good article on the Mahdists and info as to how to build a castle wall. Savage and Soldier - Lynn Bodin, 14219 NE 74th St., Redmond, WA, 98052, $12.00 for four issues. If you are a Colonial gamer, you have to subscribe to this one! Lynn has done a great job with it over the years. Doug Johnson, the first editor of S&S has a fine article on looking back at S&S over the years, as well as an article on the Nile Column, 1884-85. Vedette - Greg Novak, 618 West Union, Champaign, Ill, 61820, $5.00 for six issues. A club newsletter which is well done by Greg. It offers news of events around the central Illinois area as well as articles on wargaming. Volume II, No. 9 had an article on a new firing system for Johnny Reb. Interesting reading. Game Trade News/Game News - Dept. K-30, 700 Orange Street, PO Box 1992, Wilmington, DE, 19899-1992, $20.00 for 12 issues. If you enjoy boardgaming, this is a great magazine. Lots of reviews of new boardgames, information on upcoming releases, what is selling, tips on playing boardgames, etc. A well-done publication. Miniature Wargames - Available from hobby stores/advertisers in MWAN, $3.50 per issue in USA. MW seems to be doing quite well and is over two years old. We are quite used to seeing quality wargames magazines come out of England, last a short time, and fold due to lack of support. Nice to see MW continuing. Each issue has an article on scratch building, which I find very helpful, and the quality of writing is very high in my opinion (equal to the COURIER). What really helps this magazine, I think, are the color pictures. We all know that wargames don't look like the pictures they show, but who in the hell cares!!! Do wargamers go to Peter Gilder's house when they die? If you support any wargaming publication, support this one and THE COURIER first before any others. We need them around! The United States Society of Ancients - Kruse Smith, 2345 McFarlane Ave., Lake City, FL, 32055, $3.00 a year. Devoted to Ancients, specifically, it appears to be the USA counterpart to the Ancients organization in England. Check it out if you like Ancients. Tony Adams had a report on the WRG Tournament in Chicago in issue one.
