Origins 85 HMGS Meeting
- A Midwesterner's View

I just returned from Origins 85 having experienced another successful convention. The only drawback to the Con was that there were more miniatures gamers than those willing to put on games. But the quality of the games present was top drawer. The miniature highlight of the Con was unquestionably a 35mm scale recreation of the Alamo. This game was put on several times and always had a crowd around it.

At Origins, a HMGS meeting was held with Wally Simon presiding. The first and main order of business was the adoption of the HMGS constitution, which was published in the July-August issue of MWAN. These were adopted after a brief discussion of how they were arrived at. The next order of business was discussion of a HMGS logo. Bob Coggins presented two drawings which had been commissioned. The first was an Ancient Greek helmet with the letters HMGS under it; the other being an Eagle with a shield bearing the letters HMGS. There was discussion about both logos and both were rejected; the helmet being thought to be too ancient and the Eagle looking like a plucked chicken. The letter arrangement on the latter was considered good. It was decided that submission of new designs should be requested from interested parties with the winner receiving a life membership in HMGS. All interested please submit designs to Bob Coggins, 4208 Kelway Rd., Baltimore, MD., 21218.

Pat Condray then gave a treasurers report which showed over $$,000 and thanked LITTLE WARS for their prompt repayment of the $300 front money provided by HMGS for the 1985 LITTLE WARS convention.

The floor was then open for discussion. Bob Coggins, showing signs of possible fatigue from running the miniatures at Origins, suggested that HMGS be careful in spreading itself too thin. This brought discussion as to whether or not role players and board gamers became attracted to the hobby by watching events. Some felt this was not true, however, others gave personal examples of their experiences at Gen-Con in attracting role players to our hobby. The sanguine nature of their prose put the opposition into a rout. It was generally decided after this that HMGS participation in a Con would be by a case by case basis anyway. Several proposals were made to get a master list of gamers and judges so that more events could be provided in the future at Cons. The Midwest was well represented by Bill Hudson, Todd Fisher, your humble narrator, Ken Kaufman, Randy Kadow, Randy Pierson, Ken Bunger, and Bill Protz who gave a brief discussion of the formation of HMGS-Midwest. All in all the meeting, as usual, was lively.
