Southern Front 2004

Convention Report

by Peter Robbins

Cannon fire, alien death rays, cavalry charges and screams of glory abound during the recent Southern Front miniatures convention. The Triangle Simulation Society (TSS) of North Carolina hosted another stellar event in Raleigh on the first weekend of October. Many newcomer GM's participated this year, making the event a powerful springboard for garners new to the area to exhibit their creativity and knowledge in a large array of historical genres.

The following genres were represented at the convention: War Of 1812, WWI, WW2, ACW, SCW, WWI Air, WWI and WWII Naval, Naval Napoleonics, Andy Griffith (Yes Mayberry!, the presentation was spectacular!), Napoleonics, American West, Pirates, Vietnam, Franco-Prussian, Finnish Continuation War, Medieval, phewwwww. As you can see, this small convention packs a wallop! The models were of top quality painting quality and the terrain across the board was spectacular. The bar has been raised for the next convention.

This year the convention was punctuated by a raffle which included items worth well over $100. Raffle tickets were sold for a dollar a piece at the door and the tickets were placed in a bag associated with each item. Attendees were allowed to see all of the items except for a single mystery item. There were many fully painted sets of miniatures as well as book-sets given up for raffle this year. The items were of top quality. The winners of each item had their tickets placed back into a bag. The unfortunate winning ticket won the infamous "Madonna Magazine" which has floated around the group for years as a gag raffle item. And yes, the winner was dubbed "Most Likely To Be A Material Girl".

We look forward to next year's convention and many more to come! Hope to see you next time `round! Sharpen your swords, batten down the hatches, clear your decks, polish your boots, clean your rifles, put on your flying ace goggles and come on down to Raleigh next year for a good 'ole time. And no I refuse to "yeeeeehaw" but we do get excited about this convention, so "yippididoooooo"!
