Little Wars 2004

Convention Notes

by Michael S. Cosentino

My team and I have been running Little Wars for the past several years now, and we think that this will be the best show to date. We're scheduled for mid-April (see the ad on the opposite page to get the details) and traditionally, that's good weather here in Illinois. It's not so good that you'll want to do yard work or anything silly like that, but it's highly unlikely that you'll have to drive through a blizzard to get to the show.

Years ago, Little Wars hit hard times and many of you out there in wargames land stopped coming. For many, the show in Rochelle, Illinois was the bottom of the pile. I'm sure many of you vowed never to return. Thankfully, that was quite a few years ago. This year, like the last three years, we are located in one of the finest hotel complexes in the Chicago, Illinois area. The Lincolnshire Marriott Resort is beautiful, and their tennis building is all ours for the games, the dealers and the flea market. The show has grown back to the size that many of you remember from the heyday of Little Wars, and the quality of dealers and games is top-notch. It is well worth your time, money and effort to come back to Little Wars and give us another try.

For those of you returning to us from recent years, you'll be pleased to find that we've taken over the entire tennis building. Last year, we only used half, but this year, the whole building is ours. That directly translates to better games, more games and more dealers in the dealer area. This is definitely going to be a banner year for Little Wars.

Highlights for the convention include the painting contest, a great flea market and excellent dealers. We have been given a Keith Rocco historical art print to raffle off during the show. It's the same art as will be used on the program book cover. Of special interest to parents of budding young wargamers, the Parent-Child series of games returns. In these games, both the parent and the child are encouraged to play together, promoting education for both, and some great stories to take back home!

Our Preliminary Events Listing is online at our website: www.little-wars.com. It goes without saying that the games at Little Wars are excellent. Two premier games may stand out, so I'll whet your appetite.

GANGSTERS

I'll be running a 28mm Chicago 30's-era gangster game. Be warned, there are adult themes here, so this clearly does not fit into the Parent-Child game series. The terrain is beautiful and some of the best painters in the country, including RLBPS's Bob Bowling, have painted the figures. This one's going to be a lot of fun!

JOLLY ROGER

The Golden Age of Piracy! Duke Seifried, one of this country's best-known Gamemasters. He invites you to an adventure game extravaganza you'll never forget! A whole fleet of beautifully-modeled brigantines, sloops and warships are seeking Captains, be they merchants, Royal Navy or Pirate. Governors are needed for our lush tropical islands with romantic names like Porte Royale, Tortuga and Hispaniola, We will feature this whole panorama as a magnificent saga on Saturday beginning at 10:00am.

The games will be a lot of fun, and just being with other garners is good for the gaming soul. Come and join us at Little Wars 2004. You'll be glad that you did!
