Peter Berry of Baccus 6 and Ben Wilkins have produced the third edition (first published in 1987 of FORLORN HOPE published by Partizan press, 816-818 London Rd., Leigh-on-sea, Essex, SS9 3NH, UK (Email: ask@caliverbooks.com. Website: www.caliverbooks.com); I am not sure of the price. This a 104 page glossy paper effort with lots of black & white illustrations and some color. The authors attempted ...."to take a more detailed view of the Civil Wars in an attempt to bring out those points that make the period and the setting unique." The rules are intended for large games; one 15mm/25mm figure equals 33 real men while one heavy/medium gun equals two, and a light gun equals one real gun while one gun crew member equals two men. There is no ground scale provided. There are four classes of troops (veteran, trained, raw and elite). Stand sizes are given for both 15mm and 25mm. The rules themselves encompass only 18 pages with an additional two pages for optional rules. There is also a two page section for converting the rules to 6mm and a two page "designer's notes" piece. There are five phases to a move (declaration and reaction phase, movement, fire combat and reaction, close combat, and reaction and rally). There are chapters on uniforms and equipment, infantry colours and cavalry cornets, an extensive army guide, eight pages of beautiful 15mm and 25mm color flags which can be photocopied for use and four scenarios. There is also a cardstock quick reference sheet. I find the army lists of much value; they are broken down by army and year with specific regiments named for the armies; I would think this would be useful for campaigns. Peter and Ben have included a great deal of information in this rules set and it could well serve as an "introductory" book for someone who is interested in the English Civil War although ECW "veterans", would, I am sure, find it of interest. Highly recommended!
