Battlefields Review Magazine

Review

by Jonathan Aird

Issue 1

Battlefields Review is a new military history journal which concentrates on the increasingly popular activity of Battlefield visiting. This first issue concentrates on Belgian battlefields. There are a wide range of articles illustrating Belgium's position as the cockpit of Europe. Waterloo is discussed from the point of view of visitors to the battlefield - such as Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, who came to the site in the months after the battle. The progress of the Battle of the Bulge is sketched out, Waterloo and Ramillies are discussed from a "what can still be seen today" perspective, and the battle of Ypres is followed through the military cemeteries and monuments. All these articles are tied together with excellent information on visiting Belgium and locating all these battlefields.

The other aspect of battlefields covered in the magazine are preservation topics. The current development threats to the ECW battlefield of Adwalton Moor are highlighted, as is the successful campaign to save Tewkesbury battlefield from development. There is also an interesting piece on the work of the Battlefield Trust in helping to alert regional councils to the tourist asset they have (mostly) ignored in the shape of their battlefields.

The magazine is rounded out with news, book reviews, guides to battlefield tours and so on. All in all it's a fascinating read, very well produced and informative.
