San Diego/Los Angeles
'99 Report

by John Kovalic

Spent the San Diego ComicCon with the fun, friendly folks at the Atlas Games/Adventure Retail booth, and had a ton of help from Pam Winters (whose editorial cartoons run in the San Diego Union) and her mom, which meant I had tome to explore the convention big time.

It was my first ever San Diego convention, and I was blown away. Lots of chances to meet friends and folks I've admired for years. Three great moments: buying some original artwork from Gary Sassaman, of Innocent Bystander fame (a true gem of a comic book); meeting Keith Knight, whose "K Chronicles" is one of the finest strips around; and meeting Shannon Wheeler, of "Too Much Coffee Man" fame. As you might expect, Shannon's booth had by FAR the best coffee I'd tasted in a while, and I now wear my TMCM T-Shirt with pride.

By the way, although Keith Knight didn't realize it was mine, he plugged the "Sith Park" t-shirts in his post-convention cartoon at Salon Magazine. Check out (www.salon.com/comics/knig/1999/08/18/knig/index.html) The K Chronicles if you get the chance!

Took the train up to Los Angeles to spend some time with Steve Marmel, the Emmy Award-nominated writer for Cow and Chicken and Johnny Bravo, and to meet with a few studios. Lost of folks bought me lunch, and cruising Los Angeles in Steve's car was a ton of fun...although ending up in East LA after a wrong turn was a bit dicey at one point.

Steve and I are working on a couple of big projects that there seems to be quite a bit of interest in. And yes, they *might* involve DORK TOWER (grin). More on that as things develop. The bottom line for the moment is that it looks like I've now got representation in Hollywood -- the same fine fellow who's representing "Baby Blues," "Zits" and MTV's Tom Greene, which is kinda freaky. (By the way, Steve just taped his first special for HBO. More on that later on...)

Will anything come of this all? I'll believe it if I ever see a paycheck...but it makes life fun and very interesting. My people will get in touch with your people. We'll do lunch.

In the meantime, I've got comic books to concentrate on.
